DISCUSSION: King of the Mafia
« on: November 27, 2009, 07:26:17 pm »

Well, with a batch of the games I was involved with ended or having offed me, it seems I have room for another game.  Judging by the Threshold list my next game won't be for a while but that means I have time to hammer it out.

First off, the main drive:

King of the Mafia

1 Mafia King, x number of players.  Low number.. 5 or 6.

Each player is assigned their role.  One player, at random, is made the Mafia King gets the legendary mafiakill.

VERY hard coded deadlines, 1-2 RL days per game day, 24 hours at night, no extensions.  These days are meant to run fast.

Meanwhile, others may sign up during this process by sending the host their chosen role.  These people will be put on a que.

If the King dies the people who have signed up may join to replace the ones who've died while a new King Mafia, chosen at random, is chosen, .  Those who have died may sign up with another role.

The cycle continues from where it left off (if the old King was lynched, it starts at night, ext..).

Game ends when one player succeeds in killing off all of their opponents as mafia.

It's meant to be pretty continual, with lots of Kings dying, but with a small group of living players so it doesn't rob too many player slots.

The question comes down to how roles are assigned.

One alternative is to use the KWN:DE technique, player-chosen role based on a hyperlong list with restrictions (that are shown at the start).

The second alternative is to just assign a random role.  If so, Multiroles and insane Chaos can be allowed.

Edit: I WAS considering using BYOR aspects but instead I'm just going to run a normal BYOR for that.  For this one, there's the question of how to assign roles.  Random/Chosen/or some hybrid?
Comments?  Ideas?

It sounds like it has potential, couple of questions from me:
- How much is still Mafia versus a general forum game?  (not a bad thing, just curious...)
- Wouldn't the newly cycled players have to read up (at least a little) on what has gone before?

That being said, I'll keep an eye on this.  It looks interesting.

I dunno... 48 hour days looking for someone who wasn't scum the day before could result in pretty much random lynches.

Although it is kinda funny how the "town" is only working together so they can get a shot at killing everyone themselves.

Although running a (regular-ish) BYOR and then a hyperole KotM would probably be best.  Heck, I've even thought up a role for myself...

It's still mafia since the basic design is 1 scum vs 5 or so town.  The difference is that if the mafia dies, the game does sort of 'reset' back to 1 scum vs 5 town.

- In truth, they don't have to do THAT much reading.  Note that when the new people come in, a 'new' King is made, thus making all of the towntells of before rather moot.

- I have no problems with random lynches.  I'll also do a hybrid hammer/deadline like I have in NSBM2: 50% of votes hammers, but a deadline is also set with most votes gets lynched.  Meh, I can even see people try to lynch off folks they know is town but will 'get in the way' once they are scum.

I might end up just doing a BYOR first then something else for the KotM.  It'll also mean I don't have to worry about constant balancing during KotM.

But couldn't that person just rejoin when the mafia king is lynched?

depends on the size of the role list.  It's first come but people who had died in the last 'round' are put in the back (even if you died D1 and others joined after you signed back up).  The sign up list will show the que.

So if not many people choose to play, yes they will just return.

Interesting concept. I'd opt for a hybrid of choosing/random: player chooses the role, then the mod gets to make an awesome multirole/Insane chaos out of it.

Example: Choosing Monolith, getting Twin Radioactive Mirror Green Goo Reviver Monolith

Can you increase deadline space? I hardly think 48 hours is long enough for a discussion. Maybe 72?

2 days is actually the standard for most games, though I guess hardcoding it makes it anti-town (and really it'll be pretty meh if the first mafia King wins).

Guess I could just do it normally and allow extensions like a normal game.

Sounds cool.

And then another game will start soon afterwards.

This sounds really fun!
