Would there be any effect if I gave [SHARP] to, say...  Diamonds?

I don't know if it would work or not. [SHARP] is meant for [STONE] and diamonds are [ROUGH] so the tag might not be valid (ie it will show up as an error in the error log and not work). Now if it does work well then this is very interesting, but it would only make weapons that are as effective as steel or obsidian (dam 133%), though they might be worth quite a bit (train up a legendary stone carver before making any of them it will be worth it)

I just want a cool sword for my champion swordsdwarf, and have been having no luck with artifacts.

A black diamond sword that menaces with spikes of all the other diamond types would be WIN.

On an interesting note, in the RAWS, gems are actually kept in 'matgloss_stone_gem.txt'.  I have no idea what would happen, but you could try it yourself and let us know what it does.

My experience is that if you input invalid tags into raw entries, they system just ignores them...so it probably wouldn't hurt if you wanted to try it.  They ARE technically kept in a stone matgloss file, so there's an off-chance it may work.  Let us know!

May I ask if there is any message in the error log pertaining to the failure?

My hunch is that there isn't, because gem rock is a valid stone type - the problem you're having is that the [SHARP] tag only works on dropped stone, and the [GEM] tag tells the game to drop gems instad of stones. Have you tried putting the SHARP tag at the start of the entry, before GEM? Probably not a good principle, but there's the slightest chance it'd work...

Maybe you could make a reaction to turn it from the diamond gem to a diamond 'metal' and use that for weapons. But making the diamond metal would require a regen.

As a matter of course, I added in a dozen or so new smelter reactions (that require things I don't have - like 200 adamantine or something, so they don't clutter my smelter list) solely so I can re-purpose them if I need to.
