Veleshtân, the game of the game of the game.
« on: November 26, 2009, 10:34:32 pm »

Once upon a time there was a game.
Osmlo Ospaz
This game was based upon dwarf fortress, and so the participants decided to try a succession fort.
Veleshtân, a Dwarf Fortress succession game(I don't believe you need to register in order to read the thread)
This fortress ran out of interest after a few brief years, so I thought I might take it over here to see if anyone wanted to take a stab at it. Anyone interested in inflicting some chaos upon it before it goes?

Year 11: Riptokus

dood, that's so a Prinny. XD

Also, this fort has more engineers than military. o.O

Tempted to try a run myself and see if I can survive the fps lag. Maybe I'll try it in a day or so if no one else wants a go.

Thanks! Heh, those wacky merchants, they must really like that old Trade depot, maybe they don't like the colour of the other one...
I don't know what it is about that waterfall but it keeps taking out pets, I tried to civilise it a bit but those dwarves just don't seem to like playing in water over bottomless pits...

It looks like a Prinny Angel hoisted on a stake.

I will put it down as Haika's turn next. If someone turns up before Haika wants it then that could work too.

Toonyman, would you please post the year 16 map here?
Oh, wait, never mind, found it at http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-7591-linesmiths. Oh, right, now I remember, the name must have been changed at some point, probably to protect the guilty.

Ok, I started on this. Going to be a long, long turn for me. getting between 10 and 20 fps. Spring however is sprung. So will post the journal for then. But I think I'll sleep on it for now, and continue tomorrow. Took me around 6 hours to get this far. ;/

Playing this Blind, having not read any other parts of the community and barely understanding what some of the places in the fort are for. XD

-----
Entry 1, 1st of Granite, 16, early spring.

The fort is well established now. After the last Manager decided to quit, I was given a try for a year to do what I can to run things. I promised I'd do what I could, but things arn't looking good. I was told of a mob of goblins wait outside the door, ready to barge in.

My first question of where's the military was laughed at. After a few more shouted words and a couple heads knocked about, I finally understood that this fort relied far more on traps and a catapult defense system, than any normal dwarven military. In fact the dozen or so military we did have were just wrestlers who spent all their time beating on each other with bare hands.

I took the time to look around and see what I could before the goblins got to our gates. Telling the catapult operators to load and get ready to fire. I decided that if we get out of this alive, I may try and redesign some of the food supplies, as we seem a bit scattered and unefficent. The amount of booze for over 100 dwarfs is dreadfully low.

We also seemed to have an excess of mechanic workshops and bowyers. I immediately signaled one of the two bowyers in the workshop level dismantled. One was enough there, and the other by the bone stockpile at least held a decent idea, if one wanted some bone crossbows. Along with them went one of the mech workshops. Not that I don't love the sound of gears running, I just think we don't need quite as much.

I've decided that my farm and food processing center will be mined out to the northeast of the main working area. Hopefully there's a good layer of sand or soil to worth with under the northern slope.

With luck we can use a system of moats to cut out an indoor-outdoor farming area, for above ground crops. It may seem odd, but I do love wild strawberries. And I'd kill for some freshly distilled sunshine right about now.

Here's to hoping the goblin issue is dealt with quickly. Mebzuth is getting ready to dig out the farming areas for me, and she always looks good covered in stone dust and dirt.

7th Granite

A pump operator and an animal caretaker were married today. I sent them a potted plump helmet for their room. It's nice to hear of something happening positive for a change.

Meanwhile the digging in the sand goes well, and the goblins are out there picking their noses. I've been thinking about sending a smaller squad out to the entrance, just to try and draw them into the traps, but I can see many of the goblins out there with bows, and our wrestlers are horrible at range. We will have to see if we can't wait it out.

14th Granite

The goblins left this morning. I suppose we had gotten too boring for them to stand outside and wait to come play with them. However, before the day was done, a new force of Goblins appeared. This time with less bows among them, wich can only bode well for us.

I've put all of the military on duty this time around. I'm tired of having goblins alive so near my home. And besides, I can't plant any strawberries, until I cave in the roof of the new farm pit.

17th Granite

I've decided to use a tower in the central area of the fort to make into a catapult tower. Putting a platform high up in wich to rain stone down on our enemies. I've realized that we are completely cut off from the outside right now, and I have only the one unknown lever by the trade depot as a lead. While we can live quite well as we are currently, we have very low wood reserves, and it would be nice to get some traders. I'm going to take a risk and pull the lever.

Meanwhile, in the storage area just to the south of my new farming plots we have struck Sapphire, followed shortly by a cluster of Rubies! I see this as a good omen for the new farm plots.

Along with this, one of my fellow farmers has been possessed by a need to make something, and has run off to a leatherworks. Only time will tell what they make.

24th of Granite

Apparently the lever only raised a bridge just inside the main entrance. The goblins walked in and killed a dog chained near the catapults, I can only assume to catch thieves. Fed up with these darned goblins, I opened the doors near the lower trade depot, and sent out the champions. a full 6 groups of goblins faced off vs the dozen or so elite warriors I sent out.

The group that killed the dog was mostly wrestlers with a single bowman. Their blood coats the walls down in the catapult area. After that, the Champions moved on to a group of lashers, and then charged out the gate to scatter a speargoblin group. After that the remaining wrestler group, and two bowgoblin groups scattered and ran for it. The champions persue them as they run, and many more are killed in the sands.

We lost one champion in the initial rush outside the fortress, picked off by the goblin bows, Geshud Asobison will be laid to rest. A few others took some wounds and will be healing, but the victory is ours. Of special note is Tekkud Lortumam, a female wrestling champion, who led the charge with a baby in her hands, killing four goblins without dropping the kid. A classic scene of heroism if I ever saw it.

26th Granite

Our possessed farmer has finally come out of it. Creating a donkey leather shield. I suppose it's an acomplishment, but I would have liked a full armor set myself. The design on the shield has a silver gauntlet and a cave bat. An interesting choice, perhaps from a story before my time.

11th of Slate

Halfway through spring, and more people have arrived to fill the fort that was already good sized. With them they bring a 'philosopher' to sit around and do absolutely nothing. New Bodies means new bedrooms. I was shocked to find that we have no communal sleeping area for wounded or those without rooms. I've taken steps to fix that.

I also gave the order to make myself a private suite near the new farm areas, and started work on moving the main food stockpile down below it. The underground farms are finished, so I've removed the small scattered ones from up above. The miners still have some work to do on the above ground farms in the pit, but are waiting on the draw bridge to be finished before I complete things there. I can almost taste the strawberries.

After the migrant wave, we number one hundred and fifty one dwarven souls.

4th Felsite

My outdoor farming plans have completed today. Though not as nicely as I would have intended. Everything was set up nicely, the channels were dug properly, the bridge to the inner plots was retracted, and the last patch of sand supporting the cavern roof was ready to be dug out. Toony took the job, and somehow got sucked in with the other parts of the roof. Even though he was standing completely outside of the digging area. Additionally, the retracted bridge somehow broke, if the archeticts are going to make such a flimsy bridge, mabye I should be worried about crossing it.

Either way, Toony dug himself a stairwell out to the north, and the bridge is being rebuilt. The farm plots are planned, but several large boulders and annoying piles of unmoveable pebbles have gotten in the way of clean squares. I suppose I shouldn't be so picky they are there and will grow outdoor plants nicely, but I do wish things had gone better.

Getting the pump system with watermils near the chasm seems to be beyond me. I have however removed the farm from the muddy area below the water set up. Someone beyond me should be able to expand that into a quite nice Tower Cap farm. And trust me, we very much need one.

16th felsite

I have a new offensive strategy! Stone rain, complete with dwarf vomit...

All these dwarves get so upset over a little sunlight. Working inside the mountain homes has really done a number on most of the dwarves here, I managed to kick and prod and push people outside to get work done, but the green spew is everywhere... If the sun didn't make me sick, that just might.

I don't recall having that low of FPS.  When the caravan came the FPS dropped a bit, but it was really fast.

There isn't much flowing water or similar stuff to slow it down, but there are starting to be quite a few dwarves and as far as FPS is concerned some machines are better than others. You can turn off migration by setting the maximum dwarves to a low number in the init file in the data directory. I will probably do that on my next turn, I seem to have terrible FPS...

I'm running temperature and weather, that always bogs me down extremely. I may turn that off if people don't mind. Should speed some things up.

And yeah, my comp is slow, and larger embark areas always give me trouble.

And I certainly hope that you never become a noble, demands for ballista arrows could be unpleasant...

wooo boy....

3rd Hematite

Summer is here now, and the heat of the sands is very oppressive. I've ordered the dwarves to stay inside for now, in the cold of the stone. Setting up some new digging orders, I've decided to try and expand our furniture stockpiles, and do what I can to sort through what we have scattered about.

I'm also debating starting up work on noble quarters below us. As much as I hate the lazy bastards, I'd rather them happy(and far away from me) as possible.

15th Hematite

Our chief miner gave birth to a baby girl today. Almost overshadowed by this brief news of good fortune, our human allies have come to trade. I gave the order to move as much of the goblin junk to the lower trade depot as possible.

The paperwork alone in bringing all this narrow junk to the trade depot gives me a headache. I hope this is worth it, and those humans have brought a forest of wood for us.

The merchants have arrived, though I had to widen the pathway down by the depot, their wagons were getting stuck. We will have to reposition some traps to widen the catching area nearby.

That said, A dwarf ran up to me and gave me a note that more goblins had appeared to try and siege us.

16th Hematite

Argh, three dwarves ignored my orders to stay inside and let the goblins come to us. rushing out to get some sock dropped in the sands or something else just as stupid. A hunter, an animal trainer, and a pump operator all were standing outside any sort of defense just as the goblins rushed in.

All three were killed by the goblins. If nothing else, I suppose they brought some of the goblins in to get caught by traps, at least two are caged, and three more were killed.

Perhaps in some sort of strange connection, one of our metal workers got real quiet, and walked slowly and relentlessly to a forge. Answering no questions about what they are doing, and being very secretive about the whole matter. I suspect there will be another artifact built before long. Assuming we survive the goblin onslaught.

I've sent the warriors out to do what I can, but the tantrums have already started. Apparently by closing off some of the stone traps many of our dwarfs started rushing out to recharge them by taking the long way around. I can only put our hope on the scant military we have now to survive this.

The Champion Tun is the first to be killed, shot by a goblin arrow. Tekkud is injured and trying to rest in the middle of the battle, quickly cut off by another goblin arrow, the baby was similar killed by arrows.

Enraged by the slaughter before him, The champion Uvash charges out into the sands, taking on a full two squads of goblins.

Tossing one goblin like a rag doll, and cracking the skull of another against a flint boulder, Uvash plows his way through the mob, as the bowgoblins pour out behind him from the fortress in pursuit.

Somehow during all of this, The Tallest Dwarf has managed to rush out into the middle of the battlefield. He doesn't look any too happy about it however. Right behind him came Sibrek Laboredspotted, the Helm of Vandalizing. And... is that a pair of metal pants he's beating that goblin to death with? o.O

[You can't make this stuff up folks. XD Jeebus, I love Dwarf Fortress.]

*a large smear on the paper indicates some sort of trouble for Haika, eventually the writing returns.*
By Lorbat's Beard, Mebzuth is throwing a tantrum, almost lost my head to a thrown pick. This siege better end quick, all I was to do at this point is go back to my farms. My nice quiet untantruming farms...

For obvious reasons, I've ordered the masons to start on stone coffins.

What in a scorpion's scrotum. The upper trade Depot is made of WOOD?! about the most precious material we can find. It's being torn down, those humans there can move their crap to the other depot for trading.

Meanwhile, back on the battle front, Uvash has ran off to the northwest, distracting at least half the goblins to run after him. While the other half are busy with the pants-wielding wrestler, it seems Tallest has managed to slip in between the two groups, and is safe... for now.

19th hematite

THAT's IT....
*blood, a large rip in the middle of this record, and a large gap in written time frame leave people wondering what exactly happened.*

[lol, Haika started tantruming... probably because he couldn't get out to his strawberries, and his lover was throwing a fit. XD]

21st Hematite

They tell me we broke the siege, and I broke a stone throne. With my bare hands. I tell ya, when you get so angry... The goblins didn't get any more of us, but we lost a pump operator and a farmer to tantrum casualties.

The humans also left before any trading could be done. What a horrible summer...

I'm being told now that a siege operator has gone berserk. Nearby champions took care of things, but it's still another sad note.

It seems also that our brewer just murdered a peasant trying to take his last barrel away. I'd like to say that he deserved it, but the law says otherwise. I myself will have to spend nearly two months in prison if we ever make one. I can only hope that I survive. The brewer will get a beating, and nearly a year.

A fishery worker, has gone mad today. I can see no reason other than the chaos from that last siege. Followed by an insane child.

As a farmer I have absolutely no idea what to do to stop this. I can only hope that things calm down at least somewhat. I've sent a handful of dwarfs into the fortress guard, hopefully to do what they can to police this mass of unruly dwarves.

23th Hematite

I've put these massive amounts of trap components to use, covering the main entrance with stone fall traps. I also found that when the humans left, they left behind a large amount of goods. Maybe they felt sorry for us.

[it seems when I destroyed the wooden trade depot, the stuff left in the stone one became the fort's goods. Very odd, but at this point...]

26th hematite

Ok putting guards in was a bad idea. I noticed that they were beating criminals. And how did I notice this? One of the peasants came running in to tell me that one of the guards stopped beating a criminal to throw a tantrum...

I've taken the guard off for the time being... They are making matters worse.

27th of hematite

Out of all this chaos, our metalcrafter has made quite a nice chain. Perhaps I will use it to chain one of those black bears in my room...

The Frightful Ruin... That doesn't bode well for the mess this fort has become. The chain is worth over a hundred thousand though.

28th of hematite

Toony has gone insane today, stricken by melancholy, along with one of our soap makers. We are getting coffins made, as well as beds for the wounded. I will do everything in my power to stop this before it destroys us all.

3rd Malachite

Oh the death... An engineer went berserk, with a crossbow in his hands. He started shooting in the middle of the dining hall. They say crossbows don't kill dwarves, but it sure got enough of us.

11th of Malachite

The battle with the tantrums and berserk dwarves continues. I've ordered the military to patrol the fort, we've got to stop these killings as much as we can. Even so, a Lye maker managed to take out Esgar the Engraver today before the champions got to him.

I built extra mason workshops to increase coffin production(one was quickly destroyed by a tantruming mason) and then have been filling the area I first thought of as a communal bedroom, into a community tomb. I can barely get the tombs layed out before they are occupied.

13th Malachite

I begin to wonder if any of us will come out of this alive. A brewer went berserk, and I get a complaint from one of the engineers that the fist fight he was going to start was interrupted by the crazy brewer. The champions took him down, while I'm informed our Dungeon Master has gone insane, babbling something about stone and metal and goblin buttocks...

17th Malachite

Riptokus, melancholy... along with a carpenter, two children, and a baby that was murdered.

26th Malachite

Many deaths, many insane. Ram went berserk. Killed by champion.

19 Galena

The Tallest was thrown against a wall by a tantruming dwarf today, his neck snapped. Miasma fills the halls, and we can barely keep up with getting coffins made and filled. And it is not over yet.

26th Galena

Praise be! A baby girl. How nice. At least get her out of that miasma. And that doesn't mean sitting on that corpse over there either!

4th Limestone

Autumn has come, but I see no future for this fort unless at least some of us survive... and I think I'm loosing my mind...

[The only ruler still alive... I thought for sure he'd be dead by now. Gotta be what little happy thoughts he has from having his own suite.]
