The most evilest fort I ever started
« on: November 26, 2009, 07:48:56 am »

I just started a new fort and searched for a "good" (as in cool, not as in "benign") embark position. I found one containing a river, a chasm, one of those endless holes and supposedly a magma pipe that I couldn't see upon embark but it was probably somewhere in there. At once I get this feeling something isn't QUITE as it should be in this place. I looked around and saw a ton of enemy. This place had naked mole dogs, troglodytes, cave swallowmen, giant rats, batmen and probably another couple of bastards I don't remember. These span at the very least three or four pages of unit info.

OK, I think, I will try. Proceed to draft three dwarves in the very beginning and start to mine out the place. Half a minute later something suspicious happens again. A cat is stuck in a net... So I look around and fiesta! There's a friggen GCS brutally murdering the cat. I proceed to sigh and bang my head at my desk, while my dwarves got torn to pieces one by one. The last one to go, the miner, got chased out of the mine by two batmen; once outside the cave he got attacked by a couple or three naked mole dogs and two troglodytes. Such ended the fortress of Istamurdim (more like instamurder.) Upon trying to reclaim the fortress the "preparation screen" gives me 70 dwarves to reclaim with...

Anyone else have tales of insane evil instant fun?

I embarked right on top of GCS once. It was only a few squared away from the wagon. Thinking something in the sense of 'well, this is gonna be my shortest fort ever', I had all my dwarves jump it at once, and somehow the miner killed it with his pickaxe without any dwarves dying. Only some broken bones.

The rest of the season was rather fun too, as there were still a ton of troglodytes a troll and some other garbage wandering around there.

This is when I started to mod my default creatures into being a bit tougher though; 7 untrained and mostly unarmed dwarves shouldnt be able to kill the huge vicious giant cave spider. Same for dragons and other megabeasts, they are such pansies in vanilla df  :P

One of the forts I'm running at the moment has several skeletal giant eagles enter the map every season.  They nearly ended the fort in its first year, killing the expedition leader and most of the dogs I brought and badly injuring three of the starting seven.  The only thing that saved me was the massive immigration wave the next year, half of whom were put straight into hammerdwarf training.

The problem with large creatures is the critical hit system. Mobbing a large creature with many smaller ones gives a large number of critical hit chances, any one of which could potentially disable the target. Unfortunately there is no protection against critical hits in the current raws, though I suspect the upcoming version's properties (like bronze collossi made of actual bronze) might change this. All flesh will not be equal in the next version.

I can't wait to mod Bronze Colossi to be made out of Steel or Funstuffium.

i started a fort next to a volcanoe with several fire imps. One of the fire imps shot a fireball at my dorfs, missed, set the grass on fire, which then spread across the entire z level and anialated all but two of the starting group, who quickly became melancolly. Fortunatly i got two waves of imigrants.

I thought my fort would be a peice of cake, I picked a nice little spot near some goblins where I found a stretch of chalk, iron ore, platinum, and many other minerals, and dug. However I seem to have forgotten to vast dangers of mountainsides. The dreaded, Giant Eagles. We all know what happens next.  (0.0)___E___

I always liked the one where the caravan started right next to a major river.

Was gonna be such a cool site, Funstuffium, Magma, One half terrifying, one half serene...

And in the first 20 seconds 4 dwarves got carped and then the Zombie carp started coming ashore.

You see, booze is a parasite. It lives off dwarves and compels them to dig into the ground so as to create massive defences to protect it's self. It really shouldn't be called dwarf fortress, Booze fortress would make much more sense.

this happened to me also.  i embarked right next to a fire imp in a forest.  one fireball later, the forest, my wagon, and most of my starting party were burned to a crisp.

Seriously, it would be unstoppable. You can't crush mega-beasts. Its immune to magma. Its also immune to weapons. Immune to piercings and crits. Cannot suffocate, cannot drown....   :o

I guess that'd be drop it either into a generic pit or a chasm? Really no other way around it.

Now, mod it to fly, and you have a more or less completely unstoppable monstrosity unless you close your fort to the outside world.

IIRC, megabeasts also won't be able to be beaten by a puny cage trap.

So the only real way to deal with it would be to lure it into a very large cage, the kind build with iron blocks and an iron drawbridge. Once its sealed away, bury the adamantine colossus in that iron cage, sealing away the unstoppable evil.

But be sure to leave a trapdoor where nobles and/or goblins/elves can be dropped in.  :D
