Also; here's a question. If smoking Nicotine is really just fine, why is smoking Marijuana illegal?
Some silly reason. If a joint was good enough for Queen Victoria, it's good enough for us mere mortals.

Marijuana's illegal because it was popular among blacks and mexicans in the 1930s, heroin and cocaine for similar reasons

Morality followed from legislation and now people think marijuana is illegal because it's immoral or something stupid like that

Some other cited reasons for it's illegallity are the pharmaceutical companies wanting to turn a bigger profit, and the burgeoning nylon industry, that was getting around a few years ago too. I doubt people knew any better back then than now really, it doesn't take much to scare the world. My solution is to consider it legal, fuck 'em.

The same goes with people who are affected by environmental tobacco smoke significantly.( ...) it makes some sense for government intervention to occur, at least on some level.

The problem there is that the more the government steps in, the more people will be effected by tobacco smoke significantly, degenerating into 'coughing fits' around smoke and the like. It's plain as day how psychological it can be having read this entire thread. It's like aqizzar's example of Arlington, what's exhaling more carcinogens, the smoker or the exhaust pipe? Think about it. Yet people don't fall over and DIE at the sight of the exhaust pipe. I'm not revisiting old material here, my point is psychosomatics, not the hypocrisy.

But I don't care if restaurants and bars ban it, over here in australia there's separate smoking sections which work, ie if the sections are inside they must have x amount of ventilation and surrounding wall space. In practice they work flawlessly. The reason I don't care is because I don't like the smell of bubble-gum, so I can sympathize, not to the point of outcry but still. It's not a health issue, it's a comfort issue.

It's a comfort issue. It's also a health issue.

Yes, there's a psychological aspect to it, but there's also the part you're missing, where some people are actually sensitive enough to it for it to legitimately, physically bother them, sometimes to the point where they simply cannot be around it.

Yes, cars are bad for this too, but you don't run cars inside restaurants or on apartment balconies, and, as we've said before, cars are just slightly more important to society at this time. And if you ask me if I'd support finding other ways to run cars besides gasoline, yes, I sure as hell do, because gasoline engines being all over the place sucks.

Also; here's a question. If smoking Nicotine is really just fine, why is smoking Marijuana illegal?

Weirdass historical reasons related to various industries and scare tactics.

It's strange. If you task around about why marijuana is illegal, practically no one will even be able to give you a reason (except for the government). Most cops hardly care, and people are starting to realize it was a big stupid mistake in the first place to make it such a big deal.

Also unfamiliariality {no red line!}. I remember the first time I saw a bong lying around I associated it with skegs (jocks I think you call 'em?). Most people didn't grow up very familiar with it. Most police become pretty familiar with it's users, while some just sit in offices and send out surgical style drug missions.

Everytime someone quotes that incredibly poor analogy the gods kills a kitten. Please, think of the kittens.

No. It's a health issue. Namely, the issue of the harmful effects of tobaco fumes on non-smokers.
You don't have the least bit chance of changing his mind.
Why bother?

Also yellow journalism protecting wood-based paper interests from hemp, and institutional pressure from government agencies who depend on drug prohibition like the ODCP and the DEA with help from non-public entities like the drug testing industry and privatized prisons (which is internationalized when the US pressures other countries to toe the same line).  Doesn't hurt that that it makes it easier to toss liberal hippies in jail.

edit:

If you toss in the hygiene hypothesis (granted it's just a hypothesis, particularly in relation to non-living agents), the reinforcement here can be more than just psychological--the more we sanitize our environments, particularly in childhood, the more easily irritated our various membranes and immune reactions may become.

Not like that's a good argument for smoking carcinogens in children's faces, just food for thought.

No we're not. Only you are. And yes, I'll keep on repeating that.

Actually, many people have argued the same in this thread. I'm sort of flattered that I'm the only one you find memorable, though.

Yeah, I've noticed. Smoking outdoors and running a car outdoors are still a valid analogy, though.

And You Don't Need Cars! Really what is wrong with you people?!?
"Society will come crashing down", down to what? There are billions of people without cars in the world and they seem to get by, why are you defending your car addiction so vehemently?

Just realised something- Siquo is trolling. This makes me slightly happier, because for quite a while I believe he truly believed what he was saying.

If this is actually the case, I wouldn't really recommend it. There's enough stupid crap in these threads (from all parties involved, really) that we don't need intentionally stupid crap messing it up, and moderation doesn't tend to like it either.

Nah, I mean everything I said, but knowing that most of you wouldn't accept it for its truth, repeating those statements is kind of trolling-ish. On the other hand, the same could be said for the antismokers in this thread.
