Edit: Wait, would they still chase after vermin to eat if they werent allowed to eat creatures? not that it would help the issue, but I'm sort of curious now.

As Danarca mentioned above, [NO_EAT] might accomplish that.  If you mean making them herbivores, I don't think the game currently supports that, which is a weird oversight but hey.
