Corpse identification
« on: November 25, 2009, 12:21:48 pm »

So, when my dwarves die as recruits (because the only way to make them stay put is to make them military) how can I tell what they were in life?

It'd be nice to know whether my carpenter or my hauler died.

There is like ~47 parallel topics about this.

Some of them include, locating corpse of deceased by the unit list zoom function.
Identifying their bones/whatever they decay into.
And having a deconstructed coffin not drop it's contents when you want to move it to the honorary military mausoleum.

DF Companion will let you look at the skills of a dead Dwarf, even after he is  reduced to a skull and bones.

You could always customize their name to include a hint about their general skills, for instance I usually name my Craftdwarves that work with Stone and bones: Stonebones.  I'm sure there is a better way of doing it but this works for me :)

Look them up in legends.  It should tell you what their previous professions were.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

When you get them where you want them to be, lock them in and deactivate them from the military.

Presumably he recruited the dwarves in a last-ditch attempt to get them to survive -- clearly they didn't. It's not like he's leaving them recruited for lengthy periods.
