On my current fortress i live by a river in a souposudly cold biodome but the river never freezes.
but when i visted my fortress in adventure mode the river was frozen?.

so what gives?.

In adventure mode, it gets colder at night. In Fortress mode, it doesn't. Presumably, you got there at night. (or late evening, early morning etc.)

Not sure why it wasn't freezing in Fortress mode, though. How long were you on the map?

I'm not sure how well Toady's modeled weather, but if it's accurate enough, "cold" doesn't have to mean "frozen", or it could only at certain times. Maybe you're in the middle of a temperature variance where "cold" means "just above freezing during the day". As we already stated, night doesn't really happen in fortress mode. Or maybe you played with the temperature settings(perhaps turning it off and on or something). Honestly, in DF, it isn't always easy to see the line between "glitch" and "feature".

Ah, that explains the function of the [NOCTURNAL] and other similar tags that indicate some time of day for the activity of a creature. I've never played Adventure Mmode and I was left wondering which part of the month or season was considered nighttime in Fortress Mode.
