Adventure Mode - Walk off ledge
« on: October 01, 2007, 11:53:00 pm »

I'm not sure if the new version does this already, but if it doesn't, I would really like it if we could voluntarily step off a ledge (for instance, jumping from the top floor of a tavern into the middle of the tavern in a swashbuckling duel, or deciding to hop off a diving board into a deep lake).

How will landing in water be handled in the new version?  For instance, if I jump down three levels, will I need more than 7 units of water (per tile) to avoid smashing against the bottom?  If I jump down 20 levels, will I hit the surface of the water with enough velocity to seriously injure myself even without hitting the bottom?

If the new version will be anything like the old one, ankle deep water will be enough to save something falling from low orbit.

For me the water numbers refer to inches because i think dwarves are stupid enough to drown in 8' of water.

I thought falling didn't do any damage in the current version unless it's down a chasm?

I'd me more precise and say "I think falling is impossible in the current version, unless it's down a chasm".  ;)

Actually, falling is possible in the current version. The reason is simple: The current version has a 3D mode.

No, the update didn't happen while you weren't looking. The mode in question is called "adventure mode."

Yeah, the new version has a careful walk button (Alt + dir) that lets you move into squares that aren't safe.  Even if there's only one movement option (like walking into a grass square or stepping into an open space), it'll give you a menu for it so you don't do something by accident.  Regular walking disallows dangerous options.

I haven't done falling damage yet.

Will falling damage be in the release? I was planning on making a deep pit rather than a moat as protection. On that note, when falling damage is in, could we add trapdoors (operated and automatic)and spikes? (they would only increase falling damage)

I think that those two are more for Fortress mode though.

It'd have its benefits in Adventure mode too. Charge through the entrance to a goblin fortress and you'll find yourself trapped in a massive stewing pot!

In the Tragedy Mule video, you can see that the mule gets stunned when it's dropped down the impromptu drowning well. I don't think it was a big enough fall to cause any damage, but I do think falling damage is in.

I can see the image. Magma falling from the upper floors and your realization that you will just see yourself burning turn-based.

You are blistering! x351
You are burning! x132
You are being incinerated! x10
You have burned to death!

Stuzo Xanadu begins eating a Dwarf Stew.

Yeah, now that's the kind of detail Adventure Mode needs!

Additionally, inspired by another post, we could use jumping, and an attached skill... like Morrowind and Oblivion! When we hit legendary we're able to jump over the chasm with ease and can jump on top of rooftops! Higher jumping skill also reduces the damage you take from a fall. So if you drop a goblin into a 5 tile deep pit, and he's only a novice at jumping, he'll probably go splat. But if he's a legendary jumper, he'll likely survive with minimal injuries and may even try to jump back out.
Just a thought.
