A bad kangaroo sausage.

Also a stale corn chip, because I lost my appendix to it.

He might mean basashi, which is raw horse meat and apparently sometimes fatty.  Some of my mom's relatives who are basically Japanese rednecks offered her this delicacy in a you're-not-allowed-to-refuse way.

With basashi?  I'd try it if it wasn't gristly.

Is sushi any good? I heard if you had a more 'western' palate then one might not like Sushi at all.

It's delicious.  It never struck me as a hard-to-acquire taste, but then again I've been eating it since I was like 5.  If you like fish at all, though, you should have no problem.  The first thing to know about sushi is that it comes in two main forms -- maki, little cylinders of seaweed wrapped around rice wrapped around fish/vegetables (traditionally, either tuna or cucumber), and nigiri, small slabs of fish on top of rice.  Americans tend to go for maki with inauthentic ingredients like avocado and cream cheese.  I think those are gross, but your mileage may vary.

If you want real sushi, I guess I'd recommend starting with salmon, in nigiri form, which has a mild but distinct flavor and just melts in your mouth.  If you like it, move on to tuna and unagi (eel), and then branch out to yellowtail, mackerel, etc.

Also, they'll give you a little shallow bowl, into which you pour some soy sauce so you can dip the sushi in it.  If you do try this (and you should), dip the fish side of the nigiri, not the rice, otherwise it'll fall apart.

And if you love everything you try, get chirashi.  Oh god I'm hungry now.

You know Footie, I don't think you've ever mentioned where you live. I'm just somewhat curious, since I'm pretty sure everyone else has mentioned their homeplace at some point, but I don't recall yours.

Ha, I'm one of the few people who lists it in my profile.  I'm near Raleigh, North Carolina.  Probably proximate to bjlong, if he's still at NC State.

Sushi is excellent. It's a bit squeamish at first, but once you get used to the idea of ingesting raw meat, it is delicious. Salmon especially has an amazingly good taste when it's raw. My favorite was some kind of eel, I could kick myself for not remembering the name.

However, seeing as this is a "nasty food" thread, I think that the nastiest thing that I've ever eaten was an unfortunate batch of cookies that must've had ginger extract substituted for vanilla.

So, if I just so happen to see a Sushi shop, I'll think of you and enter it. If I do this however, what should I tell the person behind the counter to give me? Some Nigiri with a side of fries?

Nope.

You ever had a piece of meat that was practically rubber?

That's gristle.  It's the tough bits of tendon and connective tissue that don't soften when cooked.

And, in general, sushi is seafood and rice.  So if you like seafood, you'll probably like sushi.  I don't like seafood, so it's lost on me personally.  Traditional sushi forms are pretty simple; the westernized versions tend to add lots of other stuff to it, so I don't think having a western palate would affect liking traditional sushi.

Yeah, ordering can be a little complicated.  Generally, nigiri is not ordered from the regular menu (though maki often is).  Instead, the restaurant will usually have little placards on the tables, with pictures and names of various types of nigiri.  At many places, they'll have a sushi ordering form where you write the quantities of each type you want, and then give it to the waiter.  Other places (usually the less traditional ones) just take the order orally.  Finally, almost all places have sushi samplers in the regular menu, of varying sizes, but it's usually chef's choice what goes on them, and they don't usually save you money.

That all sounds complicated, but basically, if you tell the waiter (or sushi chef, if you're sitting at the bar) that you want one order of salmon nigiri sushi, they'll get the message.

If you try to order fries, ninjas will drop from the ceiling and kill you.  However, tempura (lightly battered and fried seafood/vegetables) is often eaten with sushi and it's really good.  That's on the normal menu.  You can also hardly go wrong with a small side of seaweed salad.

Also, sushi's expensive, painfully expensive.  Your tab will explode if you aren't careful (assuming you decide you like it).

my worst thing ever

was a beer

not any kind of beer though...

it was called "breakfast champion" - was served to me as part of a beer menu to a very fancy experimental food menu at a resturant a few years ago

good grief that was bad beer

take the cheapest and foulest beer you can imagine, then mix in equal parts day old shitty vending machine coffee. that was what this tasted like - AND I DONT EVEN LIKE COFFEE!

it was like boatmurdered, on my tongue. and all the elephants were made of bad coffee - and all the lava was beer, which wasn't good either

it was a true horror

I don't get why people are so squeamish about raw meat. I always eat a bit of raw minced meat when I'm preparing anything with it, to make sure I got all the spices right. And it tastes good.
