...so if there's a door, and a room filled with 6/7 water (or so) past the door, whenever someone tries to enter the room, they'll get washed away and the door will close behind them?

They wouldn't enter the room in the first place. No path, see? On the other hand...

Just might.

Dwarf paths through the diagonals, opens the door, gets sloshed back by the water. Some means of topping up the water would be good.

I think we need to get back to the matter of dwarven drop pods.

Gentlemen, we need our dwarven Spehss Mahreens.

I've encountered two problems in my science build water canal. Apparently it takes a little bit more engineering in order to get a passageway more than two tiles wide. From what I read in another thread, however, the width of the channel (for pressurized water at least) doesn't matter. My problem now is how tiny my ocean is, and the fact that it's all on one z-level, thus no pressure at all. Somehow I didn't notice that... My last ocean (the other one I committed science upon) was like five deep at the area I mined.

Think I'm going to start a new fortress...

Aret those doors or floodgates? I don't get it.

Doors. The idea here is that a dwarf has a valid path through this room, by stepping diagonally along the doors. But when he actually opens that door, the water floods him back.

I'm not sure what the point is either. But it's amusing. There may be some way to weaponize this, like with magma...

Hmm. Immigrant burning device.

Floodgates are X. Doors are +. Those are +. Ergo, those are doors.

I don't see why dwarfs would ever want to path through 7/7 water. If it was full to 3/7 or so, maybe, but the knockback wouldn't be that strong.

The point is that they aren't pathing through water at all. They should path through the room by taking a diagonal path over the doors, which have dry land beneath them. Their projected path is this:

█████
777
77☺█
77
█☺77
777
█████

That's all dry by virtue of the doors, and so, pathable land to the dwarfs. So they have a valid, dry path. However, when they actually open the door, the water greets them face on.

Ah, I see now. Didn't realize the purpose was to get them to walk over the doors. That's clever, I totally encouraging someone testing that.

Yup, it works. Now to figure out some way of weaponizing it. Those down stairs are a quick and easy drain.

Intermittent Mist generator? Send your depressed dwarfs to pull the lever and the small burst of water that pours out and down them stairs providing that mist gives Urist McSaddwarf a happy thought. Could be used as a placeholder while your multi tiered waterfall into the diningroom/livingquarters/jail/frontentrance/magmapit is completed.

I'm indulging in a spot of SCIENCE! [tm] with my latest fort; after I set up the 20-storey drop and the flooding chamber, I decided to try and have some fun with gravity by setting up a retracting bridge to briefly fill a 5x10 area with stones falling two Z-levels onto the target's head (and one pig, but putting that in the 'ammo hopper' was out of frustration that my civ didn't send me a female so I could start a pig farm). I don't know if it'll do any damage, but that's what SCIENCE! [tm] is for.

So, how is your science going? Does dropping rocks on people through the use of pressure plates and bridges work just like a stone trap, except way more cool because you did it manually?

This delights me.

As for weaponizing it, maybe magma + noble-only lever or magma + seal off all other entrances to the fortress.

Use it for an alternate entrance to your fort.  One that's only open while all dwarves are commanded inside, like when goblins, orcs, or elven merchants come.
