Author Topic: If I change the pop cap in Init, do I need to start over or regen?  (Read 1407 times)

Had a fortress going pretty well, but a decade or so in, started wondering why I had so few dwarfs and no sieges.  So I check the Init, turns out that, for whatever reason, the cap was set to 50.  If I change it, will I start getting migrations and births as per normal, or do I need to start over?

No, it takes effect immediately.

Where immediatly is the next scheduled immigration (for immigrants).

Also of note, if you lower to, say, 150, and you have 149, you can still get a wave of 20 immigrants.

Totally immediately? Every time I wanted to change something, either in init/interface or in the raws, I saved and quit DF to do so. You mean I don't have to do that, at least in the init?

No, it takes effect immediately.

Where "immediately" means "as soon as you save your game, exit Dwarf Fortress, restart it, then load your game".

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yeah.  Sorry, should have been more clear.  If you edit the population cap in the init file, then after the next time you log out of dwarf fortress and then log back in, the new population cap should take effect.  Except if you were about to get an immigrant wave and you just reduced the population cap, you might get it anyway.  In your case it might take a season or two before you start getting immigrant waves since you're increasing it.  But you don't have to gen a new world or start a new fortress for the new cap to take effect.

for this problem you need to change, save, and restart.
Had a fortress going pretty well, but a decade or so in,
for thia problem you need to start over from the begining, preferably on a better suited embark place (a new regen migth also help)

Eh?  I had assumed that my invasion problem was linked to my low pop-cap, being that the wiki says invasions don't happen until you have 80 dwarfs.  Was I mistaken?

Maybe he is making a joke, that your fortress has survived for a decade with things going pretty well?

Probably, and I just didn't see it.  Wasn't even actually a decade, just felt like it with no invasions.  Now that they're popping up, this should start getting interesting again.

But if they don't make things interesting enough, what's the best way to piss off the elves?  I've taken to siezing entire caravans, and they haven't sent anyone to tell me I'm not allowed to cut trees, so I'm otherwise stumped.

I burnt the entire ****ing world to the ground and so far they don't seem to mind. So I've turned to magma-izing all of their caravans.

The start and intensity of invasions is linked to fortress wealth, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that in 40d they can happen with fewer then 20 dwarves.

It's linked to several things.  This is from the goblins' entity definition.

   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POPULATION:2]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PRODUCTION:2]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_TRADE:2]

The orcs have a "1" in place of some of the "2".  They attack earlier.

   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POPULATION:1]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PRODUCTION:2]
   [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_TRADE:1]

The Wiki seems to indicate that the number, which ranges from 0 to 5, is the level at which the trigger fires.  I think it could equally well be the first year in which the level is tested, but I have no evidence that this is the case.

That would be because trees don't burn.

Actually, Elves can't see the amount of trees you fell if you use the wood immediately. Try to build a huge wood stockpile so they see 100+ logs and go "Ohgod, that tree murderer!". Then wait for them to come again and go "He's still doing it! This means war!"
