Just started DFFing, a few questions
« on: November 23, 2009, 01:24:58 pm »

Good day fellow DFfers

after trying to build my 3rd fortress after having a lot of fun in the first two. I still stumble upon some very annoying problems

1) getting boatloads of immigrants 20+ wich will spark of goblins waaay to fast
2) having 5 picks and 5 miners and only 2 dwarfs are actually mining (the miners have all other labors turned off)
3) cheesegrating 5 zlvls and still finding barely any flux stone or iron ores

If you got any tips on how to counter/solve any of these problems i'd be happy to hear from them!

1) You can turn down the max population in the init. That should keep the goblins away until you're ready.

2) There are all sorts of potential glitches and problems that could be the cause. Can you give anymore details? Maybe they can't reach the picks?

3) Sounds like you just have a flux/iron deficient map. Not really much you can do about it other than embark elsewhere.

You can edit the pop cap in your init file to limit the immigrations if you want.  Or just get the excess population to stand under a drawbridge.  (splat!)

Erm.  The miners can reach the place you want them to mine?  They're not too badly injured to mine?  The picks aren't forbidden?  They just partying?  I don't know.

That'll happen.  Not all locations have useful metals or flux stone.  Although those excess goblins can help you with the iron ore problem.  If you really insist on having flux stone, you can use the site finder to search for a location guaranteed to have it.

1) Start preparing for goblin ambushes and sieges early. Draft some soapmakers, make them some quick leather armor. Have them spar. In a pinch, your miners are an excellent militia.

2) Are the picks forbidden? Can your miners reach the picks? Are you sure you have five? Do they all have their labors enabled? They're not trapped anywhere?

3) Flux and Iron are not guaranteed on any map. You can embark in places that can have loads of both, though, but you need to know where to look. I suggest perusing the DF wiki articles on various stones.

-the immigrant solution should work then

-there should be flux on this map, ill just try some other lvls then *cheesegrating is fun*

-dwarves are healty, can acces the mining area (since the others can to and they break in the same meeting room/area were the other diggers are idleing) the picks are in the trade depot, I've checked my stocks 2 iron 1 steel 2 copper picks

... the picks are in the trade depot...
Maybe the Miners will only take them if they are in an appropriate stockpile? Create a Weapons stockpile, and wait for the picks to be stacked there.

Switching a dwarf's Weapon preferences from Unarmed will disable the Mining labor.
Enabling the Woodcutting labor on a dwarf will also disable the Mining labor.

Have you done either of these?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

All the flux stones are layer stones (except calcite which is only found in other flux stones), not clusters or veins within other layers. If you dig into a level and don't find flux, digging around nearby isn't going to find it.
Sink a stairwell to the bottom of the map in each biome you have. If you don't find any flux, there's none to be found on your site.
