What's more fun than a hammer-full of monkeys?   :D

A hammer made of monkeys.
Make a series of 2x2 rooms, floored with hatches, monkeys fill this room.

PULL THE LEVER.

Edit: Oh yeah, and make it a 10 z-level drop.

While I'm guessing you were intending to make this a monkey-splattering idea, this actually would work a little more interestingly - if the enemy's directly underneath and in this situation you're dropping only the monkeys, not the construction... the monkeys will actually land directly on the enemies regardless of the height and be perfectly okay. You just need to train them to have an insatiable bloodlust first :D

Okay, not monkeys.

Berserk merchants?

But imagine walking towards the gate of your hated dwarven enemies, when suddenly:

Harvesting berzerk merchants could be fun. Since visiting creatures don't eat, you'd just have to seal the elves into the depot, wait for the berzerk ones to kill off the melancholy and babbling ones, then release them into a cage hall and deposit them into your drop shaft. To get the most at once, give massive profit margins to increase the caravan sizes. You could totally weaponize the elves this way.

I seem to recall cave-in tests where creatures in a cage were thrown free but left unharmed.

Also, after it's all set up, mod monkeys to have the body temperature of magma.

Post videos.

You could have a lever pulling creature locked in a cage that is released via pressure plate who will then pull the lever once invaders run over the pressure plate. He could also be in the room below the monkeys so he dies from pulling the lever. This serves no purpose and might not work.

If the Elves would bring me another Giant Desert Scorpion so that I could start breeding them, I could fill it with THOSE. That sounds even better than Monkeys.

You know, there's really no need to discriminate... you can use all three!

For the first unlucky squad to get to the gates, you drop the monkeys. Not trained or anything. Just monkeys for the hell of it. Once the second squad gets there, release the giant desert scorpions. That'll prove a bit more interesting, to be sure, but it's likely that they'll be killed by other squads, esp. marksgoblins. Then comes plan C.

Release the berserk elven hordes.

For additional fun, stockpile wood in their storage room! And more monkeys!

GDSs don't breed. They're all [FEMALE], and I don't think they have [CHILD] information.

The way you're describing, it sounds like you're more likely to crush and outright kill your enemies with the cave-in, and likewise cover their bodies with the floor that's holding up the monkeys.  Then you just have a bunch of stunned, possibly broken monkeys lying around.  Unless I have the wrong mental image of your design...

My guess is the hammer will probably miss the enemies - with a 50 or so tile long path of spikes I still had orcs make it all the way to my soldiers. So the hammer is for the dust and crippling the enemies, then it's monkeytime.

I like it, though I think odds are half of the monkeys will be injured and you'll need a decent military to clean up the survivors, both simian and goblin. Other than that, brilliant.
