Dwarves won't train with crossbows
« on: November 22, 2009, 03:13:44 pm »

Built some archery ranges, and I saw them shoot a few bolts at them, but they haven't touched them since. I have plenty of ammo, enough room, and they are standing down. Whats going on?

Currently, marksdwarfs will only use wood or bone bolts for practice.

You also want to be sure they carrying anything "extra" like a spare sock or backpack in their hands(many reasons why they would do this) which would stop them from practicing.  Lastly, sometimes they will just stand around rather than practice, so give it a few seasons.

I need them trained now!  >:( How am I supposed to defend if they can't hit the long side of a barn?

Also, make sure you have a barracks defined.  I had the same problem, only it extended to all of my military.  It took almost a year before I realized that my room full of beds wasn't set to (b)arracks.  If your marksdwarfs can't spar in barracks, they'll just hang around chatting, never practicing their archery.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

No, but you need to have a barracks.

Another thing to check is to make sure the archery ranges are all "pointing" in the right direction; you have to set the direction when you create them.

Everything seems to be in order, they use them, but very rarely. *sigh* I just want them to shoot arrows until they are wicked good, but they shoot one and then run off to do nothing really, just hang out it seems.

... but they shoot one and then run off ...

You aren't recovering your spent bolts, are you? That will cause them to just shoot one bolt and quit. Bolts should be automatically forbidden on firing, unless you've mucked around with your 'o' menu.

Military dwarves spend a lot of time just hanging out in general. They only train when they feel like it. If you want to force them to get better, put them on duty and station them near some hostile units.

Another thing you might try: build an archery target for each dwarf. In my most recent fort, for example, I designated 5 marksdwarves and 3 archery targets. By the time one of them reached legendary, two were at "marksmen" or less, and the other two had never trained at all, not even once. As soon as I built more archery targets, they all started training.

I've got another, but similar problem. After getting a couple Sharshooter (I always give custom name to my champion, otherwise I end up stationing the Axedwarf behind the fortification while the marksdwarf rush on the enemy) I decided to train their armor, shield and hammer skills. I gave them each a copper hammer and sent them to train. Now, they've been hanging around the statue garden with their hammer for one year whithout training once. My axedwarves and guards are just fine, wha's the problem?

Any injuries to their nervous systems (spine, brain, etc)? They won't spar (ever) if they've taken CNS damage.

No injuries at all. Maybe it has to do with the fact that tey're champion? I remember having the same problem in the other direction before. (although then I didn't check for nerve injuries)

Also, a broken spine won't heal. One of my champion got one and spend his time resting. Will he ever be able to do something useful? (For the moment, I titled him "Housekeeper" and gave him a small room in the entrance of one of my apartment tower, but he isn't a terrific housekeeper, he just spend his time sleeping/resting....)
