You can build with it.

You might want to enable it in 'z', 'stones'. Sometimes it's disabled by default.

At the moment, it's just another rock. Mercury isn't in the game yet.

Cinnabar. Whats up with that one?

It's bright red. It's just another rock, though. I like to pretend it's toxic, however, and make cinnabar items for export only.
Started by a cinnabar quern, which was a huge WTF, so I decorated it with bone, shell, and toxic (IRL, sadly not in DF) metals, and sold it to the elves.

We have a wiki for rock-related questions, by the way. Just search it for the name of the rock, and you get an instant answer.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

They reached Legendary level in some skill.

BTW, as Ubern00b said, you should give a try to the wiki.

Alunite is hydrated aluminium potassium sulfate, KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6.

If you use the Molten Rocks mod, you can use alunite in place of bauxite as magma save material. I can confirm that it works with 40d16.

You can look at the 'z' 'stones' menu to see what a stone is used for that most stones aren't used for.  In vanilla DF, it only shows stones that actually have a use.  If you have the all economic stone mod, every stone will be on the menu, but if they have no use other than masonry and crafting, it won't list anything.

It sounds like you're using the all-economic mod (which I believe comes with the mayday package).
Personally I don't like the mayday package because it screws around with the controls and puts multiple commands to the same keys.
