I don't think you can just sign up to be a Rogue Trader's head engineer.  In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, you've got to be a Techpriest Explorator with at least half of your body replaced by machinery to be a head engineer.

Alaric was born on the Xan'Tai family's great flotilla(Void-Born), and spent his childhood and part of his young adulthood fighting other youths of the family in organized challenges meant to sharpen the young Navigators' mental and martial skills (Stubjack).  Alaric showed great promise, and was soon assigned to a rogue trader of the -blank- Dynasty, as part of their ancestral compact.  His strong sense of duty to his family made him a fervently loyal member of the rogue trader's entourage (Duty to your Dynasty).  After several years of this, the ship's gellar field suffered a severe failure and began flickering during an extended warp journey(Dark Voyage).  Alaric managed to navigate the ship to a safe place and exit the warp, although most of the crew was killed.  For his bravery and valor, Alaric was presented with an ancient Xan'Tai seal, possessed by one of the earliest members of the family (Pride).  Alaric has recently been assigned to another Rogue Trader of the same dynasty, to continue his service.

Alaric is pale and gaunt from literally a lifetime in space, and keeps himself completely bald.  His eyes are gray, but his warp eye is a dark, sickly green.  He has a mutation that causes a ringing sound in the ears of people around him, and a metallic taste in their mouths.  He is always accompanied by a servo-skull with a laspistol, because it's awesome; and carries a centuries-old Mordian-pattern power sword called Contempt, because he has a lot of money and likes to flaunt it.

Jeez, that took forever.  It may be because I spent about 2/3 of the time talking to Cleverbot, though.

You could be a Void-Master, which is kind of like what you're thinking. They know everything about their spacecraft, inside and out, and are used to operating, not only on board the craft, but outside the craft, in the void.

BACKSTORY:
Solar was born on Hovener VI, a forge world and temple to the Omnissiah. At first he rebelled against the system and took to the foundations of Hovener VI and spent a long time amongst the filth and the scavenger drones.

But that changed when he happened across an old shrine of the Omnissiah, long abandoned as the new city was built on top of an old one and yet this building still stood and endured many years of dilapidation. As he entered, he heard a voice, not in words but pure logic and Solar had no doubt that it was the Omnissiah. It told him of how he had great things ahead of him, of what he could accomplish in the name of logic. Solar quickly forgot about his passed hate and rejoined the many menials that slaved in the factories of the hive world.

From the moment he joined the ranks of menials, the ideals of the Cult Mechanicus were driven into his mind again and again into he believed every moment was given to him by the all knowing and powerful Omnissiah, a debt that can only be repaid by labouring in it’s name in till his finale breath left his weak flesh behind.

Solar quickly found his area of expertise, star ships. He made many advances in the field including backwards engineering a void shield technology thought long forgotten, easily twice as powerful as the standard units currently used by many of the Imperium’s ship. His work was quickly noticed and was inducted into the ranks of the Tech priests.

Specialising in ship repairs and maintaining of the machine spirits, Solar is an important asset to any captain. Able to repair broken plasma feeds while a ship is in the heated combat and to coax the most stubborn of Machine Spirits into cooperating. His talents also stretch to weapons, whether they are the prow lance batteries of a star ship or the humble lasgun.

He is also able to hold his own in a fight, able to use his many augments to deal death to any one who would mean harm to the Imperium or any of the Omnissiah’s creations.

He thought he was invincible, that the only logical path was for him to be the greatest tech priest to live and that he was one day to become the Fabricator General of Mars and why wouldn’t he? For he had the Omnissiah’s blessing. Maybe he’s ignorance was why it happened, but Solar believes that the Omnissiah wanted to show him what power could do to the mind, how it can dull the sense’s and how he would become useless to the Omnissiah’s plans. For when he was on working his way up the ranks, still on Hovener VI, Solar was working on a powerful crystal matrix that could increase the power of any current passed through it. He became careless and left the device, unblessed and unguarded on a workbench were it was stolen and used by cultist of the Dark Mechainicus, sympathisers to the Powers of Chaos who coupled it the geothermal reactor on a loop were the power was fed back into the machine and if left untended would overload the reactor casing the core of Hovener VI to explode.

The Cultist announced there doings as they took a shuttle off world and headed to the eye of terror with many trinkets. Solar, realising his folly, begged forgiveness from the Omnissiah as he made his way to the reactor as the rest of the world was evacuated. He managed to pry the device off of the machine but not after having his arm blasted with super heated gasses, rendering it useless as the place fell apart around him.

He blames the escape of the Cultists on the Navigators, as they were trained to detect openings in the warp and yet none of them felt the ripple of real space as the Cultists shuttle eased into the warp on its journey to the Eye. He has held a grudge against all of them for having been denied a chance to bring the Cultists to justice.

To this day Solar seeks those priests that turned away from the Omnissiah’s light and turned to Chaos, which lead him into the service of a Rouge Trader as Head of engineering and Explorater

As the sun fell on the city all around him, a hooded figure ducked into a nearby bar, and sat at the front. As the bartender fetched him a drink, another man sat down beside him. He turned the other way, apparently not interested in the man beside him.

"Got the keys?" Asked the hooded man.

"Right here," said the stranger. "a good ship too. Should get you off the planet quick enough; though I suppose at this point it's more for running than hiding, eh?"

"Just shut up and give me the keys."

"Right-O." As he waved at a passing woman, no-one seemed to notice a small device fall out of the stranger's sleeve, and into the hooded man's waiting hand.

"Very nice." The hooded one said. "Now can I have the real ones?"

The stranger seemed dumbfounded. "Whatever do you mean?"

"Don't play dumb; not ten seconds after you walked in here, two of the police followed you in. This is a set-up. I'm meant to leave here and head to your ship, and when I can't open the doors I'm to be gunned down. Now give me the real keys or you're going to regret it."

"He knows!" shouted the stranger, ducking to the floor. The two guards at the back of the bar pulled out there weapons, training them on the hooded man.

Should have given me the keys. When you mess with Jess, you mess with the best.

Before he could criticize himself for his terrible rhyme, he had already jumped and rolled behind a booth, taking cover from a volley of shots. He opened up his outer coat and pulled out a laspistol; his prized possession. He peered out from his cover and took a shot, catching one guard in the groin. As the man doubled over his partner fired at the generator behind the bar. The entire building went black, with the shimmering of a few sparking appliances lighting the building.

Jess knew the plan, though. The last time the guards had tried this, they'd switched to night vision. He wasn't going to fall for it this time. He quickly noticed a shimmer of red sunset light, indicating where the exit was, and bolted for it. As he'd predicted, the guard was firing at him with pinpoint accuracy, knocking his pistol from his hand. He considered going back for it, but realized the folly of that and kept running.

Soon enough, he was out of the bar, and turned right. The ship was in the hangar just down the street; if Jess could get there, he just might be able to get in and get off the hellhole he found himself on.

So, despite my cheesy and deeply cliched (It's part of the character design, I swear!  ) writing, I really do enjoy RP'ing, so I'm hoping this is good enough.

   Metallius sis patiently as he awaits his shuttle, his few posessions small enough to be hidden are tucked away under his robes. His power axe though is held in hand, perpendicular to the ground, as one would hold a staff. He holds it upright as a matter of pride, for it bears the emblem of the Cult Mechanicus, and despite whispers of Metallius' possibly heretical opinions, he holds in his mind assurance that he has comitted no offense against either the Omnissiah, or the Emperor. He will stand by that until the end, or in the end prove himself in the right.

   Checking the time of a wall Chronograph, he realizes that the appointed time of his departure draws nearer. With a quick burst of Techna-lingua, he instructs his Servo-skull to check the proper terminal and report back when the shuttle docks. It hovers off silently, dedicated to it's task singlemindedly, while it's master waits. It would not be long, but enough time to to draw his dataslate from under his robe, and write out a short entry.

   Dataslate Journal Entry: My peers cannot see the utility of researching Xenotechnology. I would quickly be shunned as a heretic by both the Ecclesiarchy and my own brothers in the Omnissiah, were I to suggest my own thoughts on this policy. Eldar Fusion guns, Webway technology, Tau Plasma rifles and carbines, each have obvious applications useful to the expansion and maintainance of the Imperium. Are not weapons crafted by the Jokaero already common throughout the Imperium? Why then forbid others? Cannot even Xenotechnology hold some aspect of the Omnissiah's grace?

   Perhaps these small herecies are symptoms of my profession, or perhaps I was made an Explorator such that I may not infect my peers with such thoughts. At least now I am free to persue such interests without the ever watchful eyes of the Magos, for soon I shall be aboard a Rogue Trader ship, where perhaps I can be of some use while I carry out my quest of knowledge. Archaeotech takes priority, my own priorites come second. That must never be forgotten.

   As he finishes the entry, the shadow of his Servo-skull enters his field of vision. Not needing to glance up, he stashes the dataslate. Eventually it would hold his research results, prove his faith, and his ideas. Not a Heretek. He rises when the Servo Skull draws close, and thanks the Machine Spirit with a gesture of gratitude, before making his way for the shuttle. Perhaps naieve of what awaits in the unknown corners of the void, where great knowledge, and great dangers lie hidden from sight. The trip to the Rogue Trader vessel by way of the shuttle would be short, but it would be far longer before they can leave the star system. He'd have time, therefore, to study his companions to be, and of course the Captain.

I also rolled up characteristics according to the book's rules. They came out a tad higher than average though. I swear I didn't cheat. I'll lower a couple if requested, or toss them out altogether.
