Need megaproject ideas, site pictures inside.
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:13:17 pm »

So basically, I have rock blocks coming out of my ears, and no ideas for megaprojects.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, I'm starting to tear down part of the mountain in the right foreground. I plan to cut it down to about the level of the adjacent tower's roof, and then make a menacing castle on top of the resulting plateau.

However, I need something to take up all the empty space on either side of the microcline bridge. Preferably something that makes good use of colored stone; I can import some if I need to.

An 18-storey Rubik's cube, not completed. Each 'square' on the outside surface is 6x6. This should require a truly brain-breaking number of blocks. Of six different colours. For a bonus, mount it on a single rim of walls, and make the bottom floor coloured too, permitting dwarves to walk throughout the Great Cube of Urist Rubikendol.

An enormous sculpture of a carp. The mouth is a ballista emplacement.

How about an overhead Fire/Sprinkler System.

Have a series of adjacent magmaducts and aquaducts with floodgates or hatches which will allow you to remotely start and/or control any fires.

Bonus points if you can use it to encase sieges in obsidian.

Build several archways over the raised walk way.

Alternatively, some arches UNDER the walkway - like, Roman aqueduct style.

Sorry to be rude, but I don't think we're thinking Dwarfy enough here.
Think of an undertaking so ridiculously menacing that it requires a level of effort that would make Sisyphus blush.
Mount Dwarfmore? Great. Now add magma tears from its eyes.
Build archways above AND below the walkway. In fact, put that walkway in a clear glass tube.

I'd also like to mention I squealed with joy at the idea of the obsidian encasement trap. Good show, sir.

Put walls on the bridge, then install pumps allowing you to instantly transform your entrance bridge into a magma river.

Lord Dakoth, what about a bridge-level slums, with a bazaar running along the roadway itself (I assume the bridge is meant to access the castle)?  It's not exactly dwarfy, I know, but if you're looking to make a spectacle, there's nothing for it.  I figure the multicolor buildings will look nice and fresh against a grim castle in the background, emphasizing its menace.  Let the nobility, meaning the legendary dwarfs, live in the castle (if any living is to be done there), and all the peasants and "nobles" live in fear in the slums.  If you can, organize a parade along the bridge every time a caravan comes through--I guess by drafting the peasants to stand by the thoroughfare and bridge-apulting crap like leaves and thread over their heads.

An 18-storey Rubik's cube, not completed. Each 'square' on the outside surface is 6x6. This should require a truly brain-breaking number of blocks.

Almost 6000 blocks?  Hardly brain-breaking.  Maybe brain-spraining, brain-bruising, or brain-itching.  Definitely brain-tickling at the least.  That's assuming it's not hollow, though a hollow cube would make more sense (y'know, so Armok can break it apart and rearrange the pieces to "solve" it).

Or build another aquaduct on top of it filled with lava, then an aqueduct on top of that with water. Where both don't simply just pour down straight below, but pipes in their supports. Though yeah, why not, make them drop directly down too.

Then build another on top of that filled with a booze stockpile for that challenge thing where you build an aqueduct of booze back to the empire... or was it water =/

You have 15 z-levels of sky, right?

Roof over the sky 5 levels above the mountaintops, wall it up to the top, then fill with obsidian. Release the lever when the elves arrive.

Or put a fling-bridge in line with the volcano and use it as a target. Carve some ledges so the occasional lucky goblin can cling to one if he survives the initial impact. He may be knocked loose by a later projectile.

Or create a fling-bridge that has a water pit as a target. All the bits and pieces will fall into the water and you'll have a pit full of bones and bloody water. Anyone who survives and climbs out of the pool must navigate through a labyrinth of shifting walls and war dogs. Those that escape hit a cage trap.

You have a volcano. Make a waterfall that pours water into the caldera in the shape of a dwarf. Then make a sacrificing altar that kills the creature in the air, dropping a bloody corpse into the lava. Bonus points if the trap has a fire imp that burns the corpse as it falls.
