How terrible is this?

In, say, the announcements screen it bounces from 19 to almost 100, and once I set G-FPS cap to 20 it started being able to go to 100-ish occasionally, but even at title screen it constantly bounces between 40 and 100. Once I load a game it immediately falls to 20. Then I unpause it and it drops to 13.

I have 158 dorfs and a lot of animals, but most of the animals are caged or are in a single-tile pit (no pathing options available). I'm about to slaughter most of my animals except my war dogs and my growing Wolf Army (and a breeding pair of each of the animals I've captured).

Still, 13-14 FPS doesn't make me happy. Any advice? Is this related to running DF through Wine?

40d did have the PARTIAL_PRINT option, but yeah, he probably needs 40d16.

Also, 158 dwarves is a lot, and your animals probably aren't helping either -- animal pathfinding is known to have some bugs.  Kill most of them, preferably with magma so it doesn't generate extra items that need hauling.

Also, having tons of loose stone (or any item) on your map can take a bite out of your framerate too.

You can also toss them down bottomless pits of various kinds, but you can also consolidate them into a single garbage square.

Hell yeah.  Now seriously, get 40d16.  Higher framerate is why those versions exist.  It doesn't help everyone, but it does tend to help people who get FPS drops in the main menu.

And if you can't be bothered, at least lower PARTIAL_PRINT to, say, 3.

I assume my saves will transfer to 40d16?

I'm mostly not-upgrading-yet so far because I don't want to play with my data too much while I'm still on my boot-from-CD-Linux.

You can transfer the save, yes.  Also, if you didn't see my edit: lower the PARTIAL_PRINT number from 21 to something much lower.  Try 1 and work up from there if you see graphical oddities.

YES:1 actually yields slightly lower FPS; at YES:4 I fluctuate around 21-27.

I like my consistency around 25 so I'll go back to 21.

As for upgrading to d16, I'll do that once I've backed up all my data and such.
