Dwarves won't mine my ramps!
« on: November 19, 2009, 02:36:28 pm »

For some reason, none of my two mining dwarves will carve out my second layer of ramps... they just do other jobs! When I remove all thier other jobs, they just go back to base (my meeting hall is on the second level) and wait aroung doing nothing!

I have made ramps before, including one unusable ramp, so I don't think I am doing something immediatly obviously wrong... but you never know...

So what is wrong with this layout??

The layout isn't the issue here, but if my memory serves correctly, you can only mine ramps to go "upward". Meaning as of right now they have no access to the area where the ramps are designated to be mined out from.

Think of it like reversed channeling where you have to mine upward to remove the floor and form the ramp.

The easiest solution would be to make some stairway that'll go down to the floor below where you've designated and then the dwarves should handle the rest and mine the are and make the ramps that'll go up to the floor above.

Afterward, you can figure out from there what you'll do with the stairways and such.

Not true. In my current fort, I've "channeled" downward eight levels by designating successive layers of Ramps covering the entire area.

No, dwarves will dig ramps downwards. Almost all of my forts have their first layer be accessed by ramps.

I have found, though, that sometimes the dwarves seem to "forget" the ramp designation. Try re-designating the ramps; your miners might notice them then.

Alternatively, you can dig down-stairs on top of the floors above the ramps, and that'll remind them that they can indeed reach the designated ramp tiles to mine them out.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Ah that explain a great deal to me cause I thought they didn't seem to do it before so I assumed they could only go "up". And I just tried it now, seem your all right. I guess you can take the other's advice on this and "redesignate the ramps". They'll probably get to it eventually. Otherwise my suggestion is a decent alternative.

*sigh*

I needed those ramps to make a decent caravan location... but I might as well make it on that z-level, and use stairways for the rest of the mines...

I guess it will always be a mystery :P

(I don't want to go 'around' to mine the ramps, in case there is some complex pathfinding problem which would make it unusable... it is remotely possible that this ramp is *just* on the edge of the 'square' that it lies on... making it impassible to caravans. Maybe it is a bug?)

Did the suggestions offered by Derakon and myself not work? If you tried and they didn't work, it might be useful to post a save file on DFFD.

I second the suggestion to undesignate then redesignate the ramps.  That should work.

I already have undesignated, and redesignated the ramps ... twice (when I thought that maybe I should move the ramps 1S, to make it more 'rampy'), unfortunatly, that didn't work either.

How do I upload a save??

What about digging down stairs on the Z-level above the ramp tiles? That is:

You could even TEMPORARILY make some stairs down... and then remove them and replace them with a constructed wall after the ramp has been dug.

I'm not talking about digging stairs next to the ramps, but directly above them - when the ramps get dug, they will destroy the floor tile above them, removing the stairs.

1. Make sure the ramp lines up with the floor above (or wall immediately above)

2. Undesignate one ramp tile, return to normal gameplay for a second, redesignate ramp tile.

3. Make sure your miners are awake and not on-break.

4. Make sure your miners have not mysteriously dropped their pick.

5. Make sure your designations really are on the level directly below accessable space, sometimes the game lags (especially on slower computers) and duplicates a down/up level action, so instead of going to z-1 you end up on z-2.
