Lost my only soldier at my newest fort...

And it was a quite weird way that is.
He just stood around, looking quite content.
Small Urist McXbowdorf then proceeded to have three grudges, and then he went insane.
Now he's running around babbling.
It's the first time I've seen such a thing happen before.. It might've been the orcs in the horizon using some mindcontrol? ::)
So, happened to you guys aswell?

Something of a little more magnitude I'd say. Recently I fought off a small ambush of goblins. The only survior was a  crossbow dwarf. Unfortunately her husband was killed in the same battle. Shortly after she went insane and starting firing on civilians in the fortress. After she killed 6 dwarves a master hammerdwarf came up from behind her and finished her off. There's no doubt it was goblin mind control.

No ... what HAS happened to me is that some dwarves seem prone to forming grudges. I remember one woman who had five. FIVE grudges! and I don't even know why. They all seemed to come quickly ... but there was a legendary dining room to keep her happy.

If he formed them all at once somehow (which makes sense. they came together, maybe they spent as much time together as possible) and simultaneously while others made friends he got grudges - and the tripple negative thought pushed him over the edge in no time.

 Freakish coincidence or proof of how fragile the dwarven mind is?

Dwarven minds aren't fragile, they're always insane. The dwarf in question is just trying out a new form of crazy.

i can't imagine mindflayers would have much to feed on until dwarven intelligence is implemented

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I can't really remember those he had a grudge against.. But I think it was a farmer, furnace operator and a miner. Just normal dwarves.
