I want more sieges!
« on: November 18, 2009, 11:05:32 pm »

This is only my second Real fortress and i'm itching for some excitement. Just a moment ago a Bronze Colossus showed up and I thought "hell yes" as I prepared for an epic battle. Only to be sorely disappointed when my champions killed the poor thing without even suffering a scratch. I've only had one siege so far, a year or two ago, and those yellow-bellied goblins wet their pants and ran after just two of their members fell to one of my champs.

This is year 7 by the way and my population is 150. Is there a setting i can change, or anything, to increase the hostilities?!

Yes, the default mega-beasts are rather anti-climatic, especially since most end up with wounds during world-gen. I'd suggest increasing their SIZE in the raws or downloading someone else's megabeasts.

Creating more wealth is generally the accepted method of increasing frequency and intensity of sieges. Another option is (for your next fortress) downloading the "orc mod" (see: modding forum). Orcs don't run so easily (NO_FEAR) and attack earlier and more often. They're also better at taking and dealing damage then goblins, and are more likely to have mounts.

The goblins are lucky to be able take one soldier down during a siege, and that's if he is surrounded, cut off, and zeroed by the spammy but crappy bowgoblins. If I were to have a proper chokepoint set up instead of fighting in open land in front of my fort and troops that actually listened to my orders (I'm looking at you 3rd Platoon) it would be even more of a slaughter.

I wish I could force sieges. It's not like they actually pull troops off the world map. In Stronghold you can spawn any invading force you like.

As a matter of practicality, unless you're intentionally limiting yourself, the goblins are not going to be able to pose an effective threat with their sieges. They arrive much too late population-wise; by the time they show up, you should have plenty of champion warriors, and even if they're armed only in leather they should be more than up to routing goblin forces.

At this point, I don't think your fortress is going to get much of a military challenge. I suggest starting a new one with a mod installed that provides for nastier enemies.

The Relentless Assault one is good, too.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

I found this changed too much of the core game for my liking, but it does give you lots of sieges.

The Orc Mod doesn't change much other than giving you the Orcs and that will give you an attack each year (started from the first winter)
