Little concessions you make
« on: November 18, 2009, 10:59:31 pm »

Any little rules you break? Any little cheats you use that you feel are justified.

Personally, I use Dwarf Manager to turn Health Care on for my child dwarves. All Health Care is right now is hauling food and water, it's not a skilled job and it's infrequent enough I think realistically children would be expected to care for the injured like that (historically they've done that, among other things).

Most everything is usually in the opposite direction.  Additional rules...

I use DM to keep my suck-ass dungeon master from trying to make metal stuff.

I am also toying with the idea of adding a few tiles of sand to my map. All the Sandy Loam and Loamy Sand and Sandy Clay and Clay-y Sand or whatever is pissing me off.

Dungeon Masters are the shit, and don't you deny it.

My DM gets the melting jobs most of the time while I hope for something big to stumble into a cage trap.  I like to imagine him as a particularly swarthy dwarf working in the furnaces that always talks very (maybe too) loudly about how "One o' these days I'ma tame me a fiery dragon!"  No one takes him seriously, no matter how much goblinite he melts down.  They like to talk behind his back and imply things about how his beard's a bit limp.  Yes, they think he's all bluster and no skill, but one of these days he's going to catch a dragon and he'll show them.  He'll show them all.

On topic:
I mod in sand for maps without it, especially when all the nobles start screaming about glass items and half my fey moods fail because I don't have the one thing that they can't live without: sand.

You could just use workshop profiles to disallow him, you know.

Since my liaison went and rushed into a bunch of goblins and got massacred, I've modded obsidian to be magma safe so I can finish my death trap because the caravan never brings me bauxite anymore.

Savescumming when my favourite dwarves die.

The DM doesn't seem to level up in skill. Since the lives of my military and by extension everyone else depends on providing the highest quality armour I can I have barred him from the touching the forge. He can melt all the goblinite he wants though.

I do the sand thing as well.

Also, I set dwarves' speed to 100 (framerate issues, even in <40 population forts).

In terms of reasonable concessions, I'll mod materials that I need either for a mandate (Must not lose skilled dwarves!) or for strange moods(Must not lose possible legendary) and set dwarven speed to I think it's 500 currently. Since I use Linux which does not play well with most DF utilities, I have to mod the raws to do this.

In terms of less reasonable cheating, my smelters can produce steel and adamantine from thin air and I'm teaching them to produce gems for me.

Obsidian has been made magma safe.

I've modded in a load of training weapons, they do no damage (for the most part) and are made at the smelter from one wood per weapon. The best thing about them is when you realise your squad of dwarves are charging at a load of orcs with what are effectively inflatable weapons.

I haved a nasty habit of scumming for moods.  Always modded possessions to be fey and savescummed if I was going to end up with Yet Another Legendary Tanner (YaLT)

Trying to break the habit this fort.  I've so far got an artifact weapon rack (L miner), leather coat (L leatherworker, fortunately), and a silver harp (L metalcrafter)
which isn't too bad for completely random moods.

Won't this also effect things like how often they hit enemies when fighting, or do you modify all the other creatures too?
