I tend to mod in a reaction to make 1 adamantine wafer from 3 iron, 3 pig iron, 3 steel, flux, and coal.

It is not as cheaty as it sounds, for making adamantine this way takes quite a toll on rescources and workforce.

I picked up this habit because my PC is too old to properly handle sites with HFS and other features.

I don't make any small concessions. I make plenty of huge concessions however! Off the top of my head...

1. No clothes. I find them a pain to micromanage, immersion breaking thanks to the way dwarves handle them, and therefore something that can be abstracted away until better controls are in place. I'll probably add them back to my game with the next patch.

2. No alcohol reliance. I like military based fortresses - lots of sieges (thanks to unrelenting assaults mod) and no traps. However, military dwarves can't carry alcohol... Another pain I can't be bothered with. Again, next patch I'll get rid of this because the military will be able to carry alcohol.

3. No cave adaption. I don't like the grandeur of my extravagant entrance halls to be stained in vomit, or my military's last defiant stand against the vile forces of darkness to be done while projectile puking. Call me weird...

4. All stones are economic, but does anyone not do this?

5. Oh right, and no artifacts, just because I don't like how they're handled. See your favourite dwarf there? Yeah, he randomly went insane because you have no glass, har har. I don't mind dwarves dying because I mess up, but I do when it's because RNGs hate me.

Obsidian has been made magma safe.

I've modded in a load of training weapons, they do no damage (for the most part) and are made at the smelter from one wood per weapon. The best thing about them is when you realise your squad of dwarves are charging at a load of orcs with what are effectively inflatable weapons.

I've done the same thing in the past (stopped doing this for more dwarfy training funtm) where I would arm my dwarves with warhammers and mod them to do 1 damage. The fun part is that my hammerdwarves were still badass. They would routinely wander into goblin ambushes with their inflatable hammers and kill all 8 goblins. Of course, they also managed to cause brain and spine damage through this to some of my younger recruits, so idk.

My current fort does not do this. I use silver weapons until they hit legendary, then let them spar with their masterwork iron/steel. Usually doesn't backfire, though I've seen quite a few more wounds this time. Combined with the regular goblin ambushes managing to catch my dwarves even though they're behind more walls and traps than normal, I have quite a few coffins in my exploratory mining tunnels.

Naero, I presume you're talking about the economic stones mod not changing all the stones to flux? Honestly, I keep wanting to delete that mod, the only stone jobs I do are making very cheap coffins for haulers and building walls.

Yep, changing all the stone to count-as economic so it can be disabled as a building material. I make lots of stuff out of rock, stuff I would prefer wasn't bright green or blue!

Right now I'm working on a tropical plantation and I modded sugarcane byproducts to be worth ten times their normal value (playing with dig deeper).

You all do know that we everytime we gen a world in DF, a new universe is created somewhere, and everytime we delete a save we kill a whole world?
Aye, we are Armok, god of blood, evil, villager gutting, fortress building, legend making and elf thongs.

I have the opposite problem. I lined the entire path into my fortress with bauxite so it would look pre-bloodied. Combined with bright white chalk walls so I could see actual blood spatter. Tis impressive. But I see your point, turning off the stones you don't want to build with is great. Now if we could disable metals for building, for the last time I don't want Green Gold walls.

Took out all the loamy-silty-sandy-clow-lame etc layers, as seaching for a decent site is just a painin the arse. Should be fixed next version with easier acces to magma.

Also reduced microline and orthoclase frequency down, got tired of half of my fort being made of the ugly stuff. Though it doesnt seem to help much in some layers...

Dont realy need any modded training weapons, I kinda have fun making them from silver and decorating them decadentally.

Very rarely I smelter some lame missing fey-mood product, but thats realy only with things like:

'Oh look, your accomplished weaponsmith/expert armoursmith has a strange mood! He grabs the strongest steel, the shiniest gold, the softest giant cave spider silk and... aww, no SHELLS! tough luck, cause there isnt enough metal on the whole map to make another dwarf like that!'

Thats just a bit too lame to digest for me.

Other then that I relish the misery messyness and choas my dwarfs cuase. Nothing more dwarfy then gateways full of blood, vomit, bones and socks!  ;D

I embarked on a 16x16 mountain with the works.

right at the beginning, I set the popcap to 50, and off we went. The game lagged already. Whenever I wanted to build anything, the material selection menu would take a good ten seconds to load - even if I had forbidden everything that wasn't THE material I wanted to use (macros).

I checked the underground river. sure enough, eighty z-levels of chasm and mist and water falling down and tunneling and snaking around. I opened Dtil, walled off the UR so it would only route to my reservoir.

The lag disappreared instantly.

Also, I could finally turn SPEED:1 off my dorfs :p

Cheats?

Well I embarked with 7 unskilled dwarves without supplies in a freezing biome. When merchants came I hadn't any supplies to build work stations or trade depots (I screwed it up) and I ordered one of their axes to be dumped. The dwarves thus stole his axe, cut down trees and built a still.

With this still they could make booze and drink again. All water had frozen and they had no picks ... so that was a necessery cheat, no one would have survived winter otherwise.... but then I realised "shit. extreme survival was the whole point of this fortress" and abandoned.

I modified the orcs to show up a little later, to give myself time to get things underground and isolated.

Works quite well, and makes sense; 7 dwarves who vanish into the ground would be hard to find until the caravans start showing up in earnest.

I use Dwarf Manager to brainwash nobles into doing something useful (except the Hammerer, who I'd prefer didn't build up his strength or get his hands on a pick or axe). Guess I could do the same with children, never really occurred to me to do that for some reason.

Also switched off the economy, but I believe that's standard practice.

If it isn't, then it should. the economy right now is so broken that if you like to build megaprojects, you cannot afford the micromanagement, general happiness drop, homeless dorfs, currency...

Currently, I think largely because I use a Mac for DF... My FPS is horrible even in small forts... SO basically I play with SPEED:1 enabled basically all the time. I do turn it off for sieges just to even things out a bit, but its currently the only way my game moves at a bearable pace.

I've used Dwarf Companion to heal bruised brains on two of my champions; they weren't sparring and it seemed to be the reason. They are now, though. And so, the training continues...

The most I've done is modify speed. I quickly get addicted to fast dwarves, especially when I was playing at around 1-10 FPS.
