Only One Pet Cat Buried?
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:17:34 pm »

I have read posts which seemed to indicate that all pets except cats will be given coffins if the coffins are set to accept pets.  I have 41 coffins, all were set to:

Use for Burial (Y)
Allow Citizens (Y)
Allow Pets (Y)

I have five burials:

Merchant
Axedwarf
City Liaison
Bull (Tame)
Tomcat (Tame)

However, more pets, cats and otherwise, have died, mostly from old age, and they have all ended up on the refuse pile instead of buried.  I now have Dwarves who say they were forced to endure the decay of a pet.  Why are more pets not getting buried?  Why aren't the other cats getting buried, or why was that one buried if cats aren't supposed to be getting buried?

Every hauler is also set to burial, so if the corpses were hauled, they should have gotten buried.  No one is being kept indoors (the refuse pile is outdoors) and there is a path to the coffins.  I just marched a soldier there.  The coffins are not forbidden and neither are any stone types.

 ???

Edit:  The Count has forbidden the export of coffins.  Would that affect burials?

Wierd. Try rebuilding and designating a coffin right next to the stockpile? just to be sure.

Are your haulers idle? They may not have gotten around to it.

Also, check for forbidden (even if you already have, its like semicolons in C).

You might want to change your refuse stockpile settings to forbid all domestic animal corpses.

I checked the coffins.  They are definitely not forbidden.  I changed one to forbidden to be sure I knew what that looks like.

I have 31 people idle right now, of whom at least half have all hauling enabled.  I have four dedicated haulers (actually children who have grown up but not yet been chosen for a profession) and they have No Job.  Three more pets have died of old age and been carried to the refuse pile.

I think forbidding domestic animals corpses in the refuse pile won't do anything but cause corpses to be left in the hallways to rot.

The Count has not been forbidding the export of coffins, at least for the last few pet deaths, so that does not seem to be the issue.

Could it be that death of a pet from old age doesn't cause a burial?   ???

Are you using 40d15? That particular release seems to be rather buggy.

No, 40d.  Not vanilla, but nothing has been done to cats except the cat-mouth fix and a gender name for the males.  I made wolves trainable, and added slugs and snails as vermin.  Nothing else has been done to animals except adding gender names to some so I can more readily tell males from females.

This is very puzzling. I'd submit it as a bug.

I was hoping someone else had seen such a thing happening, so there might be some chance it is reproducible.

I know I've had difficulty getting haulers to bury pets if the pet died before the coffin was placed, regardless of how fresh the corpse was. Maybe this is an extension of the same problem? Does seem safe to say it's a bug though - perhaps copy the save folder, kill a dwarf, and see if it gets buried despite the pets not being?

There are some bugs related to the burial of pet cats - ones that adopt your dwarves don't seem to be considered as pets for the purposes of burial and are left to rot in refuse stockpiles (and can then be crafted into totems and bolts). Cats brought with migrants, however, are buried properly.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Aha.  Okay, thanks.

Apparently work-assigned war animals are also not considered pets for the purposes of burial, even though their handlers give them names and they are listed as pets on the relationship screen.  This makes it hard when you've given two war animals to every Dwarf in your fortress.  I wasn't too surprised about that one, though.

Do Dwarves ever adopt non-cats for pets after they have arrived at the fortress?

Yes, if you make them available for adoption from the Z-Animals menu.

You could also try changing your refuse orders in the orders menu. Maybe your dwarves aren't collecting ountside refuse, causing the situation.

Amazing what I am learning about the game by playing it without economy, without invasions, and limiting migrants to 43.   :)  I remember seeing the "unavailable" in that menu but never really had the time to consider what it meant because there was too much else going on, and then once it had calmed down the FPS was too low to continue.  I saw many pets other than cats and just assumed they were being adopted in the fortress.  They must all have been coming in on the 193 immigrants.

I have now gotten the fortress's two mules adopted, and am hoping someone will adopt the giant jaguar and the grizzly bear since they are kind of the fortress mascots.  I'm not sure if what you said applies to all pets adopted in the fortress, or just cats, but if there is a chance for the jaguar and the grizzly to be buried when they die then I would like that to happen.

All properly adopted pets will be buried.

In fact, if an "Available" animal dies, it will still be buried even if it hasn't been adopted yet - "This is the resting place of Stray One-humped Camel (Tame)."
