Having refined the game with Webadict, The Greatest Battle of Orbfalls: a tale of treachery and mafia is now on the books. I plan on starting it in a lull between other games, if such a thing ever exists.

Can I ask what kind of theme it will be, and whether it will be a standard mafia game or not?
You may most certainly ask.  It is a dwarf fortress flavored mafia, and for the most part, it follows standard mafia rules.  There is a more dwarfly lynching mechanic, which I suppose I could explain if you want.  It will be explained regardless when the game enters setup.

Ok, just making sure it wasn't one of those games where you have to figure out the rules.

What's the lynching mechanic?
The day works the same as usual, you vote on who to punish, with a majority rule.  However, after that, the game enters a twilight phase, where posting is forbidden.  The players pm their choice of punishment to me, and again, majority rules.  There are three levels of punishment: a beating, jail time, or a hammering.  The hammering is instantly lethal, the other two knock the player out of the game temporarily.  Wincons simply require the opposition to be incapacitated as opposed to killed.  This probably seems unbalanced, but the roles are intended to balance it out.  I'm can't say more until everything is nailed down.

I had an entertaining idea for a Mafia game, and I'd like to run it in the near future.

Could you elaborate?

Nope. It's a surprise!

You'll need to at least give it a name for me to put it in the queue.

I think I'm burnt out on Mafia, though it's not something I like saying. Seriously, I'm curious as to how most of you manage to keep it up.

I'm not sure even alcohol can repair the OCD I've developed to combat scum-read paranoia.

This is really, really suspicious. You are claiming town here with the claim of always hunting for scum. Also, you are making yourself seem disinterested so that you don't look like you care that you survive. Lastly, there's...

Wait a minute.

Really though, I wonder how much psychological damage you get from playing mafia long-term.

That is actually subjective--differing much from person to person, Flandre (and no I don't drink any kind of liquor or whatever). It's in how the person perceives the statements offered and made by others.

Personally? I look at it by a philosopher's standpoint. Hence, I am not significantly affected by the mystique or statements offered. It's only when people use emotional tells in a hypocritical way that really gets to me. :P

Even if I have OCD.

Being as I am opposed to drinking on moral grounds I don't really find much weight with the "Drink while playing" though imagining Toony sipping wine while plotting deviously is an appealing mental image.

As for myself, though I've not been here long, I keep coming back because I like the people who play. Honestly if everyone here decided "Hey, we're all tired of mafia. Let's go play [Risk/Checkers/DnD/Parcheesi/Clue/Etc] instead!" I would immediately join up.

It's less the game [though I do like it a lot] and more of the people I play with.

I agree. This forum (and subforum in particular) has pretty much been my internet home for a long time, and I always seem to come back for you guys.
I've lost the stamina for Mafia, though...
