If you have mods saying no to inexperienced players
then make sure there is an alternate suggested. I would
have just left after trying to join paranormal 18 and being
advised to try something easier if I had not been directed
towards beginner's XX at the same time.

And if there hadn't been a Beginners starting up right then, I'd have let you play. I normally don't worry about it as much, but since I knew that there was going to be a beginners starting around the same time it made sense to direct you there first.

How much work is modding a game compared to playing
a game?

I have linebreaks at about the point that is between
the insert code button and the insert quote button. I
do it because I like how it looks as compared to just
letting it wrap itself.

To put it gently, your linebreaks look hideous and make me want to kick puppies.

Alas, Having it make you want to kick puppies actually
makes me want to change less. 10 points for every puppy
that hits a pedestrian.

Edit: I will change though if it bothers you THAT much.

Depends on how much effort you put into either, really. I find it easier, as I can update at times I'm not busy, but then again, I put a lot of effort into playing games.

Akhier's style of typing doesn't really bother me. I just wish there were more linebreaks or visual cues, because sometimes it ends up a massive block paragraph of death.

Well, while modding is quite fun, because you know excatly what is happening in game, responsibility comes first. Game has to be organized, balanced out, and so on. Players here are organized and mature; most of them know what to do, so balancing out game is the biggest concern. Efforts of players should be main factor for outcome of game, not flaws in the game. After balancing out game, there's not too much to do, writing some flavor, and posting votecounts.

Yea, it is some responsibility. But you can look at game objectively, and learn a lot how other players interact with game; how they play, what they think. You can group some players for their typical quirks: some of them are active, some lurks more. You can learn by modding how to deal with such players.

When you play a game, you're in it to win.  Dirty tricks and subterfuge are par for the course, as long as you play within the rules.

When you mod a game, you're there to make sure every player has fun.  This means the setups must be balanced, the gametype solid, vote counts done at the least once a day (twice is better if you can), and you must be available to answer questions.  You can't really ask for a replacement like you could in a game if you need to be out a while.  Like Painiac, it's a much bigger responsiblity.

If you're willing to put forth the effort, go for it.  I doubt many would mind you hosting BM XXII if you want to start there.  Hosting a BM is a good way to start- my first hosted game was BM XVII.

Also, I'm putting Roguelike Mafia into signups.

When you host a game, most of the work is already done before you even put the game into signups. That work is all balancing and such. Don't be like me, type out your flavor beforehand and not minutes before the deadline or as you're sending out role PM's. Ugh.

But seriously, if you can prove you've thought the game through and maybe talk about the game on the "hammer out your ideas" thread or at least mention you want to put it in sign-ups on this thread, you'll get players to join. Even if you ignore all the other threads and just go ahead and start the game, as long as the formatting is nice and it looks somewhat professional, you'll get players joining. I think Toaster's Mafia Salad is a good standard to shoot for. Detailed, clear, consistent, but not crazy long and complex like Paranormal.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

... I'm almost ready to say I'll host BVM1: Beginner's Vengeful Mafia 1.
[...]The intention being that if you manage to WIN this game, you can sit at the grownup's table. I think this is a fair and hard enough trophy, and worthy enough to encourage newbies to try their best. If they don't win, they can try again. And again. And again.

Hmm... rereading, that didn't come out as I hoped. Yeah, it does seem too elitist, and was not my intention to imply people couldn't join games until they won that. I blame the unfortunate wording on having posted late at night and while intoxicapated. Apologies to all who may have been offended or turned off from participating due to that; it was unintentional.

The point I was trying to make was to start a series of games one step beyond BMs, for newbies trying to hone their skills, and give those who win a cookie, an honorary trophy of some kind that they could feel good about, and it being cool enough to encourage them to try their best. The "sitting at the grownup's table" was a lame attempt to express that, but didn't mean it to say you can't play unless... I agree that in principle anyone can play anything unless there are strong reasons against it or the mods/majority of players object.

I do think a second beginner-friendly series is needed, where emphasis is made on behaviours/customs that are needed for a new player to improve, but that are not stringently enforced in BM games. Things like not editing posts, lurking, prods, proven ability to read and write, playing to win and the like. A game where mistakes have consequences, and where if you are successful you'll earn some bragging rights. I welcome ideas on how this could be done. Being considered a "grown up" I think is cool, but yeah, it does send the wrong connotations.

It'd probably take me a bit to get set up, and since you're obviously jonesing for it right now, I say go for it. Absolute worst case I'll run BVM 2 concurrently, or something.
I was at the moment of writing, but it was what they call a "vampire idea". Badass scary cool during the night, but vanishes in a puff of ash when the sunlight hits it. I'm not as gung-ho about it now, so if you'd like to call dibs I'm certainly cool with that. Otherwise, if there's interest and a bit more discussion, I could probably set it up for signups over the weekend or some time next week.

And hammers.  Don't forget that many new players will be unfamiliar with that concept.

So... a Beginner's VM, using hammers where you get points for good behaviour?
