The odd thing is when I first read one of his books, I vaguely enjoyed it. The second, not so much. And now going over it again mentally I couldn't stand to read it again, or even think about it.

At first it seemed entertaining but as I go back through and think, it seems much more preachy and pointless. Maybe I didn't notice the preaching and odd philosophy as much the first time; I hold that perhaps I slept through large portions of the book.

Part Ayn Rand, part Robert Jordan, somehow manages to write worse than both, pretentious as hell about the nature of "his work"... And yeah, then there's the bondage/rape fetish.

So yeah, thats why I suggested him as potentially more hateful.
It sounds awful.

I haven't read Terry Goodkind, but my brother has.  Awful would describe it, yes.  Me Ma was upset to find it in the house.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

Huh, interesting.

I've read Ayn Rand before, just to see what all the fuss was about, and since I tussled with Objectivist Sociologists in my department over my thesis (I lean towards Humanistic Constructivist Epistemology and Ontological theory) I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it much.

But I've never read Terry Goodkind and now I know why 9/10 people I knew who carried his books were insufferable douchebags.

Lately all I've read is The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman. It's a detailed historical of the beginning of the Great War/World War I, the events leading up to it, the actual battles, and the results (of the many blunders on all sides).

It's a real fascinating read, and I'm really impressed by the british dragoons who actually rode up to the enemy in that era and sabered them.  :o

A month or two ago, I finished reading Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. Now that was a good book. It really changed my world view. Apparently they're making it into a movie now, and Angelina Jolie is going to be Dagny Taggart... ::)
I don't think there is another writer that has ever written that I dislike more than Ayn Rand.

Whether or not you like the book really depends upon how much you like/hate her philosophy. If you're extremely socialist (read: European) you're unlikely to appreciate her books. Although I agree with her philosophy (to a point,) I concede that she isn't incredibly suited for writing books. She communicates her ideas well, and I guess that's really the whole point of the books, but her cliched, predictable characters don't appeal to me. I think that Rand would've been better suited as a speech writer.

John Galt's 50+ page sermon is too much for anybody. For a while, I actually forgot that I was reading an actual story with an actual plot.

Just as a devoted conservative such as myself would have trouble appreciating The Communist Manifesto, I can easily see why a liberally-minded person would dislike Rand.

Reading The White Road by John connolly at the moment. I have other two books of the series to read, too.

After that IŽll start Gormenghast, likely.

Eoin Colfer wrote a new Hitchiker's Guide book, because the fanbois don't have enough to rage about.

I always felt that it was nothing more than a excuse to do what ever you want. The only difference between it and not having a set of moral or ethical code period is an active discouragement of helping others. Of course for that reason I never paid much attention to her, and I could be dreadfully wrong.

Meh. It's the things that everybody reads to sate simple curiosity about whether or not they should be read. Though I gotta say, it was the blurb on "Mein Kamph" which pulled me in.

Spoiler: I've also read (click to show/hide)

But that's basically the only political-historical stuff I've read.

I really want to read Homer's Illiad, but I can't seem to find it.

recently I have read the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy book by eoin cofler.

I actually rather liked it; it had enough of the Douglas Adams feel to turn out good.
But you could tell it was written by another writer.

That reminds me, I need to read The Long Dark Teatime of The Soul after I finish Ptolemy's Gate(Which was put on hold while I read BADASS).
