How Is This Newbie Doing?
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:15:30 am »

So, I'm on my third(or is it fourth? Not entirely sure) year on my first ever actual fortress. Having read quite a lot and observed many community games, I finally decided to build it.

I intentionally sought out a site with flux, a magma pipe, but with no HFS. Ended up being a rather flat area so I've just been digging downward. Not been finding too much in the way of mineral wealth, but it's still been pretty interesting so far. Anyway, here is the map:

How do you think? Good for a first timer?

You got a weird layout but it looks alright. All I can say is that it's a bit spread out but that's not necessarily a bad thing

No, I did not realize that. No wonder it keeps resetting back to the beginning of the season I'm on despite my saving midway. Thanks for pointing that out.

Fien: Yah, it's more of an organized chaos than anything else. For instance, on the bedroom level, I kinda wanted to run a hallway perpendicular to the bedroom hallways, but messed up on the designation and so I just left it as it was, making up with the stairs instead.

Well, certainly doing way better then my starvation ridden first fort, though you did do more preperation them I did.

Though no doubt you will be running into things that make you think 'gah, had I known that earlier!', but thats part of the 'fun'  ;D

Better than my first fort when I didn't know how to dig down z-levels and starved. But you could improve on mass dwarven housing efficiency. I usually place bedrooms vertically rather than horizontally because it reduces travel time. Simple stacked 3x3 cubes with a staircase in the middle, when engraved with a bed and a cabinet, maybe a chest, will suit the needs of all but your noble dwarves. If you really want to be efficient, you can place apartments for specific professions near their workplaces.

Not bad. Your organization is pretty good, compared to people like me, who have every single workshop crammed into one space.

However, you may want to open up your workshop space a bit more to help with pathing.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

One possible problem is that you've got your workshops directly underneath your sleeping quarters, meaning your dwarves will sleep uneasily (or be woken up) due to the noise.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Looks pretty good. I mean, you're surviving; for a first fort, that's terrific. Organization is kind of funky, but that's already been touched-upon by others, so... g'job.

If you really want to be efficient, you can place apartments for specific professions near their workplaces.

Watch out for noise, though-- not sure of exact distances, but check the wiki for full deets.

edit: ninja'd on noise :\

Noise details:

4 squares from the source in case of workshops, so that is 4 z levels, and 4 squares away from the workshop.

It's like a noisecube with the workshop in the exact middle, other things have other sizes for their noise cubes, like cutting a tree or mining had 8(If I remember), and placing a chair or other furniture had 16.

Edit: And on everything else, it seems like you're doing good, I'd suggest you find the magma pipe and try to set up a magma smelter and forge, there's a lot of Fun that can be had with that.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?

That is a nice fortress, seem stable and well organized. Places are far from each other, but I see that more as a design choice than a positive or negative thing. Now, it is time to choose what will be the future of the fortress: will you focus on a great metalworking industry? fill your dwarves's room with lavish display of wealth? will you make some crazy megaproject? kill elves?
It is all up to you and your imagination, every fortress can be different. You did a good job, just go on on that road.

Looks quite decent for a first time fortress. Compliments!

One thing: I see some 1-wide hallways... If your FPS starts dropping, try widening those to at least 2-wide, 3 is better still. Same goes for single-door entries to rooms.
A dwarf that finds another (friendly) creature in it's way when moving to some place will recalculate it's path to find a path where it does not need to move over the same tile as the other creature, thus putting extra strain on pathing. Wider paths decrease the probability of this occurance, and allow for quicker repathing if nescessary, thus preventing FPS loss.

I've actually got it found and have magma forges built. If you follow the three tile hallway on the first z-level(the peat and red sand level) you'll see a big stockpile area. A couple z-levels below that are the forges and smelters.

Anyway, thank you everyone. I will take all of your advice to heart.
