Blind champion - Any use?
« on: November 17, 2009, 01:08:47 am »

So. I have a champion. HE, on the other hand, has no eyes. I don't know when this happened, or how, because it's a community fort. He's walking around normally.
Is he gonna be any use in combat?
I mean, he can't spar anymore because of the spinal injury and the broken head (I love that wound), and I think his neck, but can he even SEE the enemy?

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

can you give champions new weapons? because if so, I vote for giving the dude a crossbow!

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Yeah, you can change champions' weapons from the (m)ilitary screen just fine. And you can give him a crossbow if you like.

If you don't go for the crossbow angle, just treat him like you would any other brain-damaged soldier. Personally I just chuck 'em at the enemy until they get a fatal injury.

Rename him Zatoichi and let him loose on the enemies of your fort.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I've heard that blind dwarves only "see" a 3x3 area. I'm not sure what this does for practical gameplay but ... if a goblin is next to him that goblin is toast. I'd imagine it's difficult to avoid projectiles though... and that he'll be a very inefficient guard.

He's a normal champion, he just won't charge at enemies who are far away from him. I'd consider that a bonus, actually, I lose more champions to them running away from the chokepoints where I've set up ambushes when they see a goblin. Kind of sucks.

According to Toady One, if a blind soldier enters a martial trance, he'll be able to see his enemies as if his eyes were undamaged.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That gives me an idea for an eyeless creature without the [EXTRAVISION] tag and with [trANCES].

Pokute, I find your avatar strangely reassuring. Small girls/women scare me, beards are trustworthy and decent, so the end result is of something that should scare me, but doesn't.

There is something wrong here... but I can't identify it...

And yes, from what I've heard, blind people can still contribute to the military. I know they still do fine as marksmen, as for the melee sight range, I don't know.

This is the situation where that dude is conscripted into the Fortress/Royal guards.
