I was mining out the entire bottom of the map for riches and discovered the HFS afterwords my FPS went from 60+ to 15-16. Is this normal?

Any ideas or is it expected?

Well, you know what happens when get catsplosions? Your FPS goes down.

To elaborate, clowns always start off in ambush mode, which causes them to suck processor cycles. Until you discover them, your FPS will be down for the count.

I think fliers are probably the worst here.  Removing [FLIER] from spirits of fire might help if you can't get them exposed (in which case the pathing load drops since they have good targets), assuming you have spirits of fire.  Of course, if they don't have an access route to your fortress, they'll just hang out down below.

Based on the large amount of water and toads in the pit it seems that I'm dealing with the Frog Demons rather than the spirits. Since the Frog Demons can't fly, can I toss dwarf in the hole from above to discover the demons? Huh, my Frog Demon problem was commented on by a toad(y), funny huh?

Breach the pit from above, since that's a pretty sound indicator of non-flying demons, and channel into it; create a short drop to land and designate a pit, then throw a few spare animals into it. In their short lives, they should at least show you some demons.

SoF!?! Those things have beards that rival, nay, beat dwarven pride, they can kill you so many times you'll start a tantrum spiral with your dead bodies!

No the "demon" that appeared and is described as a boss is the same creature that leads the goblin fortresses. There are always one of these demon creatures in in every HFS. SoF appear as a group of SoF, If you find one, you will find more. SoF are bitches to deal with e.g. a fine fortress of mine reduced to a flaming mess: map linky . If your demons are frog ones, and you have an open hole from above a fun way to deal with HFS is to simple hook up a magma pump to the hole and pump the HFS pits full of magma (Note this doesn't work for SoF).

The same thing occurred to me, but unfortunately my magma pipe is on the other side of the map. It would take ages with this crappy frame-rate to do it. So I'll toss some cats in and then get around to BBQing some frogs.
Edit: I felt bad about throwing Mr. Scruffy to the frogs so I've started throwing my goblin collection in the hole.

Because kitten bombs are inherently funnier. Noble bombs may be funner, but kitteh bombs are funnier. Admittedly I can't see a reason why not both, other than that kittens are easier.

The first one was when I purposely did it because my game was boring, I had all the insane entities in there. My FPS went into a nosedive. However, when I hit Spirits of Fire, my FPS was just fine, albeit a few dwarves short...
