My guys have flooded the outside with wooden bolts. Will they disappear over time or do i have un forbid and dump every one of them? What about metal bolts?

Neither wooden nor bone nor metal bolts will disappear over time. You'll have to rid yourself of them some other way.

Melt them for the metal if you have magma. Otherwise just leave them, not a huge deal. Unless you worry about your marksdwarves picking up that single bolt and deciding that's enough for war, they aren't a problem.

Personally, if you use marksdwarves for defense in towers or battlements instead of patrols, I'd fill their tower with ammo and order them not to pursue enemies. If they're ordered to stay at their station, they will attempt to find more ammo before charging in with their crossbows as hammers. I've seen marksdwarves go through four or five stacks of iron bolts in a siege easy. Even if they're only carrying 1 bolt with them, they have access to nearly infinite ammo, works very well.

But do leave the used ammunition forbidden, or your Marksdorfs may rush down to grab a bolt from the ground instead of using the perfectly good ones in the stockpile right behind them.

I've never had them run out of their way to get the ammo. I guess if their broken pathing makes them think the ammo on the ground is closer it might be a problem. Dunno. I usually have my haulers clean it up before the next siege, keeps em in work.

Metal bolts? Haul back, melt.

Wooden/bone bolts? Haul-dump into magma or chasm, or just pile and forbid.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
