Unassigning/Releasing from cages? [SOLVED]
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:43:34 pm »

So my Village Liaison went and got himself stuck in a cage because he was raging. Now I want to let him out so he can go on his merry way. Or die in the magma he'll have to inevitably cross because I'm too lazy to let it all evaporate, whichever happens first.

Question is, I go to unassign him from a cage, and my dwarves just move his cage back to the stockpile with him still in it and put a new cage in its place, apparently thinking that I'm too stupid to notice. How do I get them to just let him out? (Or does it have to be via lever?)

Shouldn't it just be the same way as releasing animals; build the thing, <q>uery it and release the guy.  Thing is, though, if he's gone, he's gone.  You may not want to let him out.

You are doing it wrong. Don't use 'q' - 'x'... that deconstructs the cage with him still inside. Use 'q' - 'a' - <enter> instead.

This is what I am doing (q-a-enter). The dwarves just put his cage back in the stockpile and chuck a new, empty one in it's place.

Ah. He seemed to want to get off the map, so I figured I'd let him.

Bizarre. I've never seen that happen before. Have you tried using a lever? That's the only other option that occurs to me.

Maybe I'm remembering this wrong, but I seem to remember reading that if someone gets caught in a cage trap for any reason, they go insane regardless of whether or not that's why they were caught in the first place.  If you let him out, he'll promptly attempt to slaughter everything around him.  I'm not so sure he'll try to escape so much as try to kill you.  If you're not sure, then maybe give him an easy way out to the edge of the map or a really, really dangerous way into the fortress (such as directly through the barracks).

Well, the lever worked perfectly, and he went straight off the map. Odd.

Well, this is DF.  If it works, it works.  We'll go with it and be happy.

Your civ has fantastic mental health professionals that you will never have access to. Your liaison will come back, and he'll be sane to boot.

About the re-caging bug: it happened to me as well when I accidentally assigned a captured lasher to a shared animal cage and subsequently unassigned him before the order was carried out; he was removed from his goblin-bone encrusted steel cage in my citadel of torment and placed in a terrarium in the animal stockpile.

When a creature is unassigned from any cage, but not assigned a new one, the dwarves will re-cage it in another cage. This is because the creature is meant to be in a cage, but it has no longer any actual designated cage because you just unassigned it somehow. Breaking of cages by building destroyers/tantrums or by lever is the only way to unassign creatures that have been caged.

Well, actually, sometimes (I've seen it happen, but infrequently. Probably because your mayor needs to be jobless at the time, and my mayor tends to be a miner.) really unhappy dwarfs will go to see mayor. After a nice chat, they'll leave happy again.

Awesome, when? I've gone a few years now and the caravan shows up fine, but no liaison. He definitely made it off the map, though. I watched him.

I was implying he'd kick your ass. :) but the dwarves won't do that ... though technically he'll bring soldiers to protect the caravan. My latest caravan brought like 17 guards, I almos feared for my life!
