I tried earlier using a very small meeting area and I got complaints that there wasn't enough room to throw a party, so I went back to a larger area. It is around a statue and outdoors so no one gets cave adaptation. Some people still seem to have vomited when they were picking up carcasses and loot, but not on single Dwarf of the 118 (now 120) Dwarves admitted to being nauseated by the sun, or even irritated by the sun. I guess it was disgusting vermin or the sight of torn up bodies that nauseated them?
I booted the singleton commoners out of their rooms so they are forced to sleep in the barracks. They are still all ecstatic anyway because of the legendary dining room, legendary meals, and decandent drinks. I hoped that by moving their sleeping location closer to the party area they would spend more time with people and less time walking to their rooms and standing around. Most seem to be talking to friends recently now, and about half have made a new friend. The one I am concerned about has done neither.
"He is concerned about rejection and ridicule. He occasionally overindulges. He is put off by authority and tradition. He lacks confidence. He tries to live a well-organized life."
Some of the singletons are nobles, about whom I can do little. The only one without any friends at all is the Philosopher, who looks like he might be a natural loner.
"He is often nervous. He considers spending time alone much more important than associating with others. He isn't given to flights of fancy. He is put off by authority and tradition. He doesn't like to compromise with others. He is immodest. He is organized. He thinks it is incredibly important to strive for excellence."
I have an excess of males, so these two male Dwarves may have volunteered for lifelong bachelorhood.
As an aside, I don't know whether spending their time out in the rain has made a difference, but most of these Dwarves are now stark naked after 10 - 12 years in this Fortress. There are no old clothes lying around except for one sock lost in the barracks by one of my two Champion Marksdwarves, nor any old clothing in the refuse stockpile, so I am guessing they just rotted off and vanished in the outdoors.
I've noticed that sometimes people with rooms will sleep in the barracks also. I've even seen the nobles do that, and then complain about sleeping without a proper room.
So far I have only had two Dwarves wounded, both by an arrow in a leg. The injuries took about a year to a year-and-a-half to heal, longer for the civilian than for the marksdwarf. That's not counting the Liaison, who was killed by an ambush, but he wasn't part of my breeding stock.
