Do Dwarves Interact Outside Parties?
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:03:16 pm »

I am trying to play matchmaker with my unattached Dwarves.  Of 56 adults, I have 10 married couples and 10 pairs of lovers.  That leaves 16 un-attached.  I struggled to get all of them to at least have some friends, by giving them all no work at all for a year-and-a-half.  The most friendless one had only three friends after that.  Now he is back down to two friends.  The gender balance on the remaining 16 is not equal, but I think I should be able to get a few more hooked up if I can get them to interact with each other.  I've checked and some of them do have another singleton or two, of the appropriate gender, as friends.  The one who had gone down to two friends was in his room, not partying, even though he had no work assignment.  I moved his bedroom down to the barracks right next to the party room.  Should I move all the other singletons down there also, in the hopes that they will interact with each other, or do they not interact outside meeting areas?

They will interact outside of parties, but only rarely enough to make a difference.  Something like bedroom location probably won't affect much.  Your best bet is small meeting areas with many off-duty dwarves; a couple seasons of that and everyone will be friends with everyone.

All you need is an one tile meeting area. Idle dwarves will quickly pair up.

Military dwarves interact with each other quite a lot. Most of the friendships in my fortress are among the soldiers. I don't know whether being in the same squad or not makes a difference, or whether sparring or not makes a difference. Marksdwarves may be socializing whenever there aren't any practice bolts for them.

So, try putting your remaining single dwarves in a squad together. Also, check the personality of the unsociable dwarves. If they have a phrase such as "prefers to be alone", then you may just have a natural hermit or two on your hands. (Seems like there's always some like that if your fortress is big enough.)

If you do the one-tile meeting area, make in in a closed room at the bottom of a really tall shaft. Drop animals down there and your dwarves should start to get used to death and possibly prevent tantrum spirals. Also do it as an experiment to see if dwarves with the "doesn't care about anything anymore" trait will form relationships.

On the topic of military dwarves. Any dwarf with injury to the brain cannot make any new friends. The wiki doesn't say this, but I have one who bumped his head pretty early and he's been hanging out with everyone ever since (fortress guard) and he's a very good conversationalist and comedian and flatterer etcetera ... but he has only passing acquaintances despite being there for over a year.

I tried earlier using a very small meeting area and I got complaints that there wasn't enough room to throw a party, so I went back to a larger area.  It is around a statue and outdoors so no one gets cave adaptation.  Some people still seem to have vomited when they were picking up carcasses and loot, but not on single Dwarf of the 118 (now 120) Dwarves admitted to being nauseated by the sun, or even irritated by the sun.  I guess it was disgusting vermin or the sight of torn up bodies that nauseated them?

I booted the singleton commoners out of their rooms so they are forced to sleep in the barracks.  They are still all ecstatic anyway because of the legendary dining room, legendary meals, and decandent drinks.  I hoped that by moving their sleeping location closer to the party area they would spend more time with people and less time walking to their rooms and standing around.  Most seem to be talking to friends recently now, and about half have made a new friend.  The one I am concerned about has done neither.

"He is concerned about rejection and ridicule.  He occasionally overindulges.  He is put off by authority and tradition.  He lacks confidence.  He tries to live a well-organized life."

Some of the singletons are nobles, about whom I can do little.  The only one without any friends at all is the Philosopher, who looks like he might be a natural loner.

"He is often nervous.  He considers spending time alone much more important than associating with others.  He isn't given to flights of fancy.  He is put off by authority and tradition.  He doesn't like to compromise with others.  He is immodest.  He is organized.  He thinks it is incredibly important to strive for excellence."

I have an excess of males, so these two male Dwarves may have volunteered for lifelong bachelorhood.

As an aside, I don't know whether spending their time out in the rain has made a difference, but most of these Dwarves are now stark naked after 10 - 12 years in this Fortress.  There are no old clothes lying around except for one sock lost in the barracks by one of my two Champion Marksdwarves, nor any old clothing in the refuse stockpile, so I am guessing they just rotted off and vanished in the outdoors.

I've noticed that sometimes people with rooms will sleep in the barracks also.  I've even seen the nobles do that, and then complain about sleeping without a proper room.   ???

So far I have only had two Dwarves wounded, both by an arrow in a leg.  The injuries took about a year to a year-and-a-half to heal, longer for the civilian than for the marksdwarf.  That's not counting the Liaison, who was killed by an ambush, but he wasn't part of my breeding stock.   :D

Even a 5x5 meeting area will foster many relationship without the productivity loss of parties. I haven't had a party in two (real) years because I just stopped designating meetings halls.

With a population of ~65 and two 7x7 meeting area zones on top of my dining halls (so as to prevent any parties and keep my dwarves working), almost all of my dwarves were married within ten years (and naturally decided to forego any formal celebrations).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It sounds like your one friendless dwarf is a bit of a loner, and so he prefers to spend his time somewhere private when he's not working.

Put the meeting zone in his bedroom. That'll show him.

I think I worked mine too hard during the years following the final immigration wave, plus my starting seven only had one female among them so the other five males had to wait for the first wave of immigrants.  I have spent some time this morning looking over the 56 adults, both in legends and in the playable game.  I see a gap in socializing between 304 and 308.  303 was the year of the final immigration, not counting the nobles who arrived in 305 (DM), 309 (Baron & Co), and 311 (Philosopher).

Engaged Couples

302, 4x 303, 304
308, 309, 310, 311

I still have six females and 10 males unpartnered.  Of the six females, three have one or more unpartnered male friends, at least one of which recriprocates in friendship at a level higher than with other unpartnered females.  The other three have only passing acquaintance with unpartnered males.

Are you making meeting areas with the zone menu ( I > select a space > m) Or just thru objects ( statues, tables, ect)? Sounds like you're making meeting areas thru items, try switching to the zone designation and see if that ups the relationships.

I was using both, back and forth as required to turn parties off at vital moments.  For the past two game years I have had nothing but a meeting area.  I have had two engaged couples finally tie the knot, bringing the total number of marriages to 12 and engagements to eight.  The singletons are still all single.  I have been looking more closely at their profiles and it may be that some of the available females will never pair up because of avoiding crowds and such things.

On the other hand, with 12 married couples I now have 80 children and babies with no signs of stopping.  I am not certain that I really want 26 couples.   :o :D

Speaking of children, I noticed that the Count, who arrived with his wife in mid-Spring of the same year as one of my immigrant couples married in early Summer, only has three children while that latter couple has five.  Is the Count somewhat deficient in the spooring area, or what?   :D :D

Regarding this, is there any way to reliably get animals to stand on top of a floor hatch or bridge? My livestock always follows their owners or assembles in the meeting halls unless I chain them up. And sadly, animals with owners can't be chained. :(
