For anyone that doesn't know, DbtS was an action adventure game published by Interplay involving a fairly generic plot about a talkative Scottish accented warrior descending into a trap and monster infested labyrinth in order to rescue his girlfriend (who really should have been paying more attention) from her kidnappers. The combat in the game was one of the major important features because the control system was so unique at the time. You moved the sword with either the mouse or the numpad, and it moved in the way you actually told it to with your input. there were a few keys to make the weapon extend, or go into parry mode, so basically you technically had complete control. Of course it wasn't always so simple in practice. It was a little hard to get the hang of the system. The game was just really awesome though regardless. The main character had all sorts of humorous lines to yell in combat and just to talk about his predicament. You could hack off enemy limbs, and the enemies would still fight on. Not really realistic, but cool anyway. I remember playing this and the original AvP constantly at LAN parties with my friends.
You can buy the game on
GOG.
Now, just imagine a game like that but with refined controls, a longer single player, more varied multiplayer, and modern technology. Of course we'll never see it from a mainstream dev, but I think indies could totally do it.
