While this thread is all but alive. It has become too large to update the front page. Feel free to contribute and please be aware that several artifact effects and specific artifacts are not on the front page.

Total Artifact Count: 721

Artifacts are currently uninteresting and bland. This won’t always be the case with both the v1 artifact arc and the v2 magic arc.  This topic’s goal is to try to come up with as many interesting effects for artifacts as possible. I will try to occasionally update this thread from time to time.

For those who don’t know, this is a redo of an earlier topic I created. What happened is it became so large and scattered I could never tell what artifact types needed filling out or what artefacts were already done. I have also added to the current artifact list to the move here.

This Topic isn’t just for my creative bantering. Post your own artifacts, effects, or mechanics. All contributions I have not made are highlighted green with the person’s name in ( and ). Also you will notice I split this topic up into MANY parts. Well that is because I hit the posting limit VERY FAST! I am currently converting some of the previous artifacts people have suggested in the old topic and it will be up eventually.

As always never judge an artifact by its name but by its effect.

--Any effect that limits an artifact’s usefulness by putting conditions and costs on its use. These costs need to be disconnected from the user’s wellbeing or else they are detriments.

Devices:
---Devices are artifacts that represent knowledge of science far beyond was is capable of being known. They are objects that can only be created through the artifact system.

Alchemical Stones:
---Function: Alchemical stones are artefacts in it of themselves, they can only be worked on by a Legendary skilled craftsmen and produce artefacts in return who share similar but not same traits. When used for artefacts themselves they always produce powerful artefacts.

A small Artifact idea: Artifact Farms.
Basically anything grown on this plot will be either:
Nourishing: Makes this Dwarf big and strong and gives him more hairs on his chest.
Massive: Is an insanely big plant that could feed many.
Fertile: This plant has grown out of the patch and is starting to get out of control...
Compact: Looks small but has more food than it lets on.
Sentinent: Looks like your fortress just made a friend...
New Species: Congratulations! You have just discovered a new plant. Now you just have to find someone to find out what it tastes like.

Thanks Craftling for opening up my thread with a post of artifact farms.

Well I have been waiting for inspiration and hopefully I have saved enough to get out these ideas.

Statues
-Servant: The statue is a servant loyal to owner. It can cook and clean without the assistance of tools and will never tire from the effort. If ownerless the statue will seek out an owner on its own.
-Stone Body: A Lifeless statue with the ability to absorb the soul of another and come to life. If created through dark or macabre moods it instead takes on the soul of that individual. Upon destruction it releases its soul and turns back into a lifeless statue.
-Wisdom: A statue of supernatural memory and intelligence who gathers information. It can be engaged in conversation and it has no qualms with sharing the knowledge it has gained over years or centuries, though not all statues are willing to give up this information freely, some wish for knowledge in return or perhaps a test.
-Champion: If asked to do so the statue will come to life and assault the one who asks it so. A deadly opponent but those who defeat the statue are rewarded. The reward is usually combat skill but more esoteric versions of this statue could reward individuals with gold, servants, or new forms, though these greater rewards come with greater challenges. No matter how many times a statue is challenged it only gives its reward once.
-Charity: The statue is in the form of a giving creature or fruitful tree. Occasionally the statue will drop fruit for hungry individuals.
-Status: The statue is in the shape of an important immortal individual. The statue will change according to the creature. What it wears, the injuries is has gained, even if it is living or dead will be shown on the statue.
-Avatar: The statue brings words from its patron god/goddess. If the god doesn’t exist or is incapable of intelligent thought then it will pose as them.
-Dancing: The statue moves and dances often to eerie disembodied music entertaining everyone who gazes upon it.
-Pristine: A Statue of such beauty it stuns those who glance at it. Those exposed to the statue regularly can build a resistance. This beauty is not natural and ignores cultural preferences.
-Inspiring: The statue inspires all those around it to further acts of greatness.
-Testing Guardian: The statue stands and guards the area around it according to requirements set with its creation such as a pure heart, true warrior, or great wealth. Those who attempt to pass by the statue without fulfilling these requirements are struck down by the statue’s powers.

Door
-Storage: The door leads to a mysterious storage facility that doesn’t exist in the world. You may store a vast amount of objects within the door.
-Two Gates: When created the door splits into two. The doors will always lead to the other no matter how far they are apart.
-Random Transport: Upon entering the door the individual gets transported to another door, at random, at another part of the world. It can be used as a trap or as a method of random adventures.
-Friendly: Upon passing through the door an enemy of the owner is mentally assaulted. If successful the enemy is incapable of seeing those within as anything but friends and allies.
-Recall: The owner has the ability to transport to the door if they are within a specific distance.

Hmm not as good as I think it could be, but I need to post here at some time. Tell me what you think

Door
-Recall: The owner has the ability to transport to the door if they are within a specific distance.

Variation: The owner/creator/person-associated-with-it can, if he wants to, open any normal door in the world, walk through it, and emerge from the artifact door.
The pathfinding for something like this might be... impractical though.

 Please generalize, and refine the list (it's huge, and doesn't need to be). We know that spheres will be used, so start trying to figure things out based on spheres, as opposed to specific effects. Dwarf Fortress aims to be procedural, but almost all of these are described on the basis of being coded individually. For instance, just for "Conditions" you state three very specific effects, when you should simply say:

Now each one covers every one of its type, as opposed to just an example.

 I also disagree with your pre-existing attempt at generalizing, as making effects specific to certain types of items only matters in some situations. Instead, try to create categories by what an enchantment requires to function; such as the Mimic effect under chests could conceivably be transferred to every item with an opening (from mugs to drawers to beds and barrels).
 I estimate you can compact this entire list into two or three posts using such systems.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Alright I cut what you said up

1) I can understand what you are saying and quite early on in the old thread we hit the point where we realised that a lot of these

Some artifacts do have some degree of generalisation though it is mostly for conditions, impact, and the like specifically because I didn't want to explode the list to a certain extent.

2) Yes I do that to some extent (though I find that some people prefer to be more specific). Though if generalised too much this list pretty much becomes entirely about generalisations.

3) Some effects make much more sense with specific objects. A sword that can hold objects is a power in a sense. Though a backpack that can hold items probably should have more access (unless the sword builds off of the power of being able to hold objects) to carrying enhancements.

That and if I only used generalised categories then this entire list would be a blob of three categories.

4) Probably much shorter then that. In fact I probably could sum up most of these in maybe 10-20 effects if I try hard enough. Though that wouldn't be very satisfying or helpful.

Thanks for your response Nivm, Ill give it some thought. It would still take me a very long time to cut the list down if I made the attempt and I would still need to keep it ungeneralised enough to be interesting. I'll consider it.
