People have survived for millenia without simple access to convenient lighting. Animals do just fine without it. So no, unless we've somehow undergone a mutation as a society that requires us to have lightbulbs around us all the time, there's no reason to turn on a light if you don't want it.

You're forgetting that those people also had light in the daytime and probably didn't sit every day in dark rooms in front of glowing screens. Animals do fine without convenient lighting because they have the Sun.

Limiting your exposure to natural light cycles can have weird effects. I can't necessarily attest to anything more serious, but at my girlfriend's house, anyone who sleeps in her bedroom does so for a long, long time, because it's a basement room and just about no natural light makes it in.

It'd be so much more distressing if you had a UV light.

Have absolutely no lights on other than my computer for almost all of the time?
No. Your eyes being strained by low light is a myth.

Yeah, gonna lose your eyesight that way.

And spend a fortune on razor blades. But at least your hands will be warm.

Anyway, I'm most comfortable with at least some lights on while using the computer. Partially to keep the key s and surroundings at roughly the same illumination level as the screen.

Probably the only harm could be that your eyes adjust to the dark surroundings, then back to the screen, then back... but I doubt that's a severe issue.

He already said he doesn't cover up the windows, which I know a few people who do. And I'm assuming he at least goes outside for a significant portion of the day, which might be wrong. I never said it was healthy to be in the dark all the time, I said it was fine not to use electric lighting during the day or evening, or night if you're staying up late :P

It DOES make you sleepy faster.
And looks downright wierd to anyone else in the room.

But other than that, I can't think of anything wrong with it.

Yeah, I go outside. Usually during magic hour though. Except for school. School is during the daylit hours.
And my uncurtained window is really big and faces to the east.
Take a guess at the effect it has. =P

I listen to old jazz tapes by the firelight, wearing a dressing gown.
It just wouldn't work in bright light.

So I finished reading Timequake recently

Damn you.

I wish I had a fireplace...
And it was cold enough to use it.

Anyway, this thread has served its purpose, so I'm jumping on the bandwagon of having a silly thread about happenings in my life.

I read Vonnegut's Timequake recently.
It was awesome.
Vonnegut is awesome.
Now I'm reading from a collection of Anton Chekhov stories.
It's called Stories by Anton Chekhov.
Any recommendations for where I should start?

Ours is a hassle to start and the hood over the fire isn't big enough so the room gets smoky. It's still worth it just to see and feel the fire.

Our fireplace is sweet as hell. It's in the basement, where, through some mistake, one corner of the room is a whole foot lower in like, a 9x9 foot square. The rest of the floor is carpet, but that area is nice stone tile, with a fireplace right into the corner and an L-couch occupying the rest. It's great so snuggle up and fall asleep, and invariably, any sleepovers will wind up there with the fireplace going and the blankets out, even in the middle of winter. Since it's gas, we don't have to worry about burning in our sleep.

Ours is a log fire, so someone has to go outside to get some sticks and a few bloody great logs to burn.
