Fireplaces are awesome
« on: November 15, 2009, 01:00:41 am »

Have absolutely no lights on other than my computer for almost all of the time?
People keep telling me it's not healthy.

I don't keep curtains up or anything, I just don't ever turn on lights except for when I really need them.
Like reading a book or drawing something.

Pyschologically, not much. You should be more worried about eye strain though.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
My eyes are fine though, just a little bit more accustomed to the dark than most people's.

One of the people who told me about it being unhealthy said it was a sign of depression.
My response was, "And coughing is a symptom of the flu."

It can be, in the long term.

I know that some folk who live up past the arctic circle (6 months of darkness) suffer from issues from the long periods of darkness.

But it's not like it effects everyone.

Hmm no wonder I have 20/80 Vision...  :P

I'm more comfortable at night so I just tend to sleep during the day and be active at night...

I think people are getting things mixed up.

Staying in darkness can be a symptom of depression.
Depression isn't a symptom of staying in the dark.

Then again, I failed Psychology.

To combat the side-effects of "Cave Adaptation" on the eyes. It helps to go outside once in awhile.

What I usually do if I feel any risk is to take place on the eyes is I exercise them in gradual and extreme levels. From light to distance. Adaptation, adjustment/recovery speed, and looking from all directions at varying speeds (IE- Speed reading). Basically, I put my eyes through hell training. If they're still in my head by the end of it, then they're still in good shape.

As for psychologically, I embrace my insanity. It's a source of entertainment when I don't have access to my machine. It depends on your psychological goals. Do you want to be normal in the sense of the status quo, or normal by sense of observation? I choose neither, for sake of uniqueness.

Visually, my sight's been improving, despite owning a pair of glasses. I only dare wear them for aesthetic reasons (improving odds for attraction, be it), despite that they do still improve my vision. I just don't like the added weight to my head.

If it DOESN'T bother you, THAT'S a sign of psychological problems.

Eyes can't really be damaged by "too much seeing" (unless you look at the sun or shine a laser into them), although you could strain the muscles around your eyeballs, I guess...

Yeah, it's not the "eye's seeing" that's the problem, it's the fact that for long periods of time you're focusing on something that's small (text) and less than 3 feet from your face, from a glowing monitor. With the lights off you should notice that the monitor gives off light.

Staring at a computer/tv is essentially like staring at a lightbulb for extended periods, especially bright backgrounds.

That's why I detest websites with bright colors, and my backgrounds are all dark.

I much prefer dim light. I've always been able to read in very low light as well.

Shouldn't really be any worse than watching a TV or cinema screen, though...

I might argue that apart from the eye-strain, it can also screw over your day-and-night circle

once you come back to a structured environment, the lack of having a proper sleep schedule will surely bring problems with it

Despite preferring dim light, I have a pretty regular sleep cycle, normally sleeping for at least 5 or 6 hours.
