In this thread, I and anyone who cares to join me will talk about the newly released  Batman game, Arkham Asylum.  I kindly request that anything related to the plot or gameplay which might spoil the enjoyment of the game by someone who hasn't played it be ensconced in a Spoiler tag as appropriate.  That doesn't include stuff like the existence of the batarang, that you fight thugs and villains, and do detective shit on Arkham Island, i.e. stuff anyone who knows who Batman is could surmise themselves.

Long story short, it's a pretty awesome game.  Not totally awesome, but pretty awesome.

Short story long, you get to be the Batman.  This is really cool, and stays cool throughout the experience, but it has its pitfalls.  Namely, that you are not really the Batman.  You're still you, ordering Batman around like a puppet on a string.  And you are certainly not the master detective and world-champion asskicker that the real Batman is.

This shows through in the game design.  That's not a complaint per se, because otherwise the game would be about an hour long and would need no saving function, but it creates some logical problems.

For brevity's sake, I'll list all the stuff I personally like and dislike.  A few of the dislikes are enjoyment-critical, so I'm spoilering all of it.  Fairly warned be ye anyone who hasn't played it, and I highly suggest you do.

Like the Zero Punctuation review, it's telling that most of my complaints are either about ways the goddamn Batman's abilities were restricted for gameplay's sake, or ways that features could have been expanded on.  Wasted potential in several areas, but nothing that I would actually call wrong.  In summation, it's not the be-all-end-all of action games, but it's damn good, enjoyable from beginning to end, and overall a great play.  Like all the best parts of Metal Gear Solid, Thief 2, and Battletoads rolled into one game, plus Batman.

Now, if I may make a request.  Nobody talk about the ending.  Or if you do, put it in its own spoiler marked "hey I'm talking about the ending".  Because I haven't seen the ending yet, because of that checkpoint-only problem.  I went to the final area not realizing I couldn't leave again, only to then remember that I still had five secrets to find in the Penitentiary.  So I'm playing the whole dang thing again.  But because I need more than 100% Completion to drive me, I'm leaving the ending unknown.

Ah, I'll read that later. I only played the demo, so not much to contribute.

All I can say is, the combat fucking rocks. It was so very brutal and fluid. I loved it immediately.

Gah. I actually rented this out to see what it was like. Unfortunately, it seems that my Xbox desires to cause me great anger, and would not let me get past the opening where you walk with the gaurds as they take the Joker to his cell... and I really wanted to play this too.  :(

Okay, now I've read it.

Let me say this about the equipment. At least no one can make a joke about him having 'absolutely fucking everything' (technical term) on his belt. That's a step up.

Yeah, admittedly, there's no "anti-monster-thug-spray" or anything.  There is an "anti-plant" spray if you want to call it that, but it's a one time plot device that serves its purpose.

It also explodes, which is a plus.

Let's just say a lot of stuff blows up.  It's not as satisfying as it sounds, but it's a nice touch when it happens.

The far cooler part about explosions, and I'm not giving too much away with this, is that when Batman uses his explosive-gel-sprayer, he does it in bat shaped lines, complete with ears and wing streamers.  Why?  Because any shmuck can blow up a wall.  But the goddamn Batman does things the goddamn Batman way.

About the PS3 exclusive DLC...  Porting of DLC to the PC for PC ports of console games isn't spotty at best, mostly because PC gamers are used to getting the kind of crap they try to sell for free if at all so would rather just pirate it.

Of course with free stuff like the Joker thing I think it's just lazyness.  They get nothing out of it but good will, and they don't really need that from PC gamers.  At least with porting the original game they got money.

The anti-piracy thing was entertaining for the two days it was effective.

Anyway, I really like this game too. The combat is a blast to play and the transition between stealth and combat is fantastic.

Also, Aqizzar, once you beat the game, you can reenter the asylum to get everything you missed. You didn't have to start all over again.

No, if you pirate the game, you can't jump. People worked around it, but for a while it was delicious.

If I recall correctly it was more along the lines of being unable to glide from gargoyles. At all. If you did Bats would fall down and die from poison gas. Not sure though.

Newly released? I finished this game weeks ago. Ancient history by now. And yeah Aqizzar, you really didn't have to start over, you can go anywhere on the island after the last battle :)
I wish they'd pointed that out somewhere though.

I agree with your points in the spoilertags, except I played it on the PS3 and didn't have to deal with the PC conversion shortcomings. It is very much designed for consoles, especially the fighting.
