Does this Forum have a post size limit?
« on: November 14, 2009, 09:05:36 pm »

My Artifact Suggestion thread has hit the point where there are soo many effects that I cannot sort through them all causing me to second guess every artifact I create now because I believe I may have just created a duplicate.

So I am going to make a new thread for artifact suggestions with an organised front page. (as well as making it less intimidating for some of the other forum goers.

Unfortunately there are SOO many artifact effects if there is ANY possible limit to how large these posts can get then Ill definately hit it, what with over 600 effects with descriptions.

If this megapost is any indication, I don't think you're in danger of hitting it, should a limit exist at all.

That's not really that big of a post when you consider writing up 600 multi-line descriptions.
(I think Planepacked's description is longer, actually.  *Checks* 19,408 characters vs. 48,053.  Yup.  And I think Planepacked has been posted to the forums).

Edit: Just attempted previewing a (spoilered) description of Planepacked.
The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
The message exceeds the maximum allowed length (40000 characters).

Means you have approximately 67 characters per each of 600 items. :)

I think, etiquette-wise, people can triple or even quad post at the opening of their own suggestion thread just to reserve space without causing any problems.  It has been done before anyway.  I think the forum game people do it too.  I certainly don't have any problem with it.  So if you have some way to organize it over a few posts, that should work.  I can't do anything about the 40000 limit -- I've already been told that might be a little too high (something or other was supposed to be iffy once you get above 32KB, I think).

Yeah, 2^15 bytes is generally what's allotted for that type of field. Now, software should be able to allocate a second field and keep them merged correctly (and while I don't know for a fact that SMF does, I would assume so). However, page-loads should be significantly faster if you don't exceed that limit. Essentially, the forum has you merge those things each time a page is loaded. It's not a huge issue, but it's an issue nonetheless.

At least, that's my understanding.

Well, mainly the fact the storing data over a certain length in MySQL can lead to problems and complications (particularly with search indexing, off the top of my head).

Well, 40,000 characters... I guess that would be 20,000 words potentially, assuming every word was "a". ;)

40,000 characters? Hmm let me see

600+ Artifacts x10 Words * 5 character per word = 6000 * 5 = 30,000

Hmm I really could hit that limit.

No Problem (I asked Toady to delete it)

Frankly I am surprised how many times I hit that posting limit. I had to split my categories into parts.

Though apperently It was over 17,000 words.

I really made it because I was working on a weapon suggestion and I kept wondering if I made those artifacts before.
