How about High Men Magicians?
They seem good.

However, 3 Coins and 1 Food a turn.

They have Veteran, Quiver(4), Missile Immunity, and Fireball Spell.

Wooh Master of Magic!  I love this game!
Posting mainly to follow the Livestream.

Phantom warriors are killer in melee, because they ignore armor (being illusions).  In particular they slay even high-level heroes with ease.  They're actually very weak though, so ranged attacks tear them to pieces.

Ranged attacks can do more damage at close range than long range.

I always play halflings and use hordes of slingers, supported by heroes.  As far as I can tell halfling slingers are the best ranged units in the game, for their price - large stacks, luck bonus, plenty of ammo, and halfling towns are easy to manage.  Try to get "web" or "phantom warriors" to slow down approaching enemies.

To clear the black corruption squares, use priests.  A lot of races don't have priests, in which case you're SoL.  There *might* be a high level nature spell that removes them as a side effect.

But yeah, halfling slingers and nature magic.  So many good spells!
Web: Permanently grounds flyers, besides freezing enemies right in point-blank-slinger range
Sprites: Cheapish flyers
Call Lightning: Hits enemies with lightning for the rest of the battle.
Sprites + Web on flyers + Call Lightning: Game breaker.  Enemy has to sit there and eat lightning.
Crack's Call: Chance to kill anything that isn't flying (even wyrms I think)
Web + Crack's Call: You get the idea.

EDIT: And when you play, the cursor is stuck in the window. You'll have to quit or Alt-tab to do other things.

Alternatively, you can hit CTRL+F10 (someone told me it was just F10 but that doesn't work for me) or change the "autolock" option in the config file to "false"

Once you figure out how to use config files (especially the "autoexec" area) then you'll be able to effortlessly open any game using shortcuts. Currently my autoexec looks like this
Code: [Select]
mount c k:\DOS\MasterOfMagic -freesize 1000
c:
magic
exit
(I don't know if the -freesize part is necessary though)
and I have a shortcut to DosBox that has this in the target line
Code: [Select]
"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.73\dosbox.exe" -conf "K:\DOS\MasterOfMagic\dosbox.conf"
I have the config file for MoM inside the folder where MAGIC.exe is, just for simplicity. (I did the same thing with Elder Scrolls 2)

Also, in config file, change the "cycles=auto" to "cycles=max" to get the game running at normal speed.

This is how I got the steam version of X-com: UFO defense to run on dosbox 0.73 instead of 0.72

Anyways, this game is pretty cool. I'm going to start a new game with a custom wizard this time, with more enemies and on easy instead of "intro," and starting as dwarves =)

Ozymandias! Good to see you here.

Org, I found sprites pretty bad. Of course, they were summoned, so they were regulars or less, most likely, but still. My sprite regiment took eight turns to do what an elite longbowmen regiment did in one turn.

Range beats everything. So many free turns! Elites especially can just slaughter everything in the first two turns.

Thanks, Rolan - I have a few more questions. Why are all my guys getting angry? I didn't even raise the tax rate or anything, and they were fine before. How do I put units on ships so I can settle new colonies? And what's the point of melding with nodes?

When your population increases the unrest level does too. Rebels will not work either as farmers or workers but they still consume a unit of food, or something, which is a waste.

I think to put units on ships you need to have the ship by the shore, then move your unit next to them. Then, when you can, move the land units onto the sea unit, then ferry them across. When they arrive just select everything but the sea unit and drop them off. Melding with nodes, I think, gives you mana each turn... either that or it increases your base power (the amount of points you can put into each of the staves in the magic screen)

EDIT: Hehehe, when you're a wizard on the other plane instead of a snake you have a little imp demon thing for a pet =P

Anyway, maybe you should start your own DOSBOX thread?

Subtle hint is subtle.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

Yeah sprites aren't effective main troops.  They cost too much upkeep for too little pewpewpew.   But they are very dangerous to your low-level heroes since their attacks are magical, and also they fly which can be... exploited.  If you do use them, don't do what the computer does.  Only use them against targets that can't attack air, and only use their precious ammo at point-blank-range.  For lulz you can have three of them form a moving wall to slow down enemy melee, but that's not cost effective.

Like Ozy said, unrest happens when population gets high.  Build religious buildings, and leave units in your cities to reduce it.

To board a ship, just move the unit off the coast into the boat's square (I think).  Trireme's only carry two units, bigger boats carry more, and heroes don't count toward the limit.  Also if a boat leaves a city it tries to take any units that are "sleeping".

The best boats, of course, are ones with flight case on them.  Yes, it works like one would hope.  Cast it on floating islands (sorcery summon) which carry 8 units.  If you ever see the Wind Master hero HIREHIREHIRE as he is the same thing except better.

Anyway, maybe you should start your own DOSBOX thread?

Subtle hint is subtle.

Don't hire units. Just build up a decent fortress and buy them yourself for way less.
