Clearly you must flood the world with a thin coating of magma, this will start all the trees on fire and charcoal them for you.

There's a util out there for revealing veins.  I used it on my last fort (megaproject) because coal was exactly what I was looking for.  It reveals all non-layer stone tiles (so your giant round patches of microcline show up, as well as your borax and gem clusters).

I was using [SPEED:10] dwarves anyway, so a little less "lets designate another layer of rock salt to be mined for its trace minerals" was very much appreciated.

Do this. And while you're doing your exploratory strip-mining, convert all that useless rock into little trinkets to buy the charcoal and wood!

I've been attacked by elves for offering wooden items accidentally too many times, but I don't know if there's a link to wood stockpiles. Especially because most of my games don't use wood stockpiles.

I haven't been attacked by elves. I'm just deforesting my map for the hell of it (and for my steel industry).

As it is, I'm not antagonizing them until I get a breeding pair of wolves from them. I already have one. But the last two years they only brought cloth.
