Is Communism Dead?
« on: November 13, 2009, 12:00:59 pm »

No. No it is not dead.

Communist Dictatorships:
*China – Communist Party of China leads the United Front
*Cuba – Communist Party of Cuba
*Laos – Lao People's Revolutionary Party
*North Korea – Korean Workers' Party – leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland
*Vietnam – Communist Party of Vietnam – leads the Vietnamese Fatherland Front

Communist Parties Currently Participating in Ruling Coalitions (All are Democracies Except For Those Otherwise Noted):

*Belarus -  Communist Party of Belarus – participates in the ruling coalition (Belarus is a dictatorship.)
*Bolivia – Communist Party of Bolivia – participates in the ruling coalition
*Brazil – Communist Party of Brazil – participates in the ruling coalition
*Cyprus – Progressive Party of Working People – leads the ruling coalition
*Nepal-  Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and Communist Party of Nepal (United) are part of governing coalition.
*South Africa – South African Communist Party – participates in the ruling coalition
*Sri Lanka – Communist Party of Sri Lanka – participates in the ruling coalition
*Syria – Syrian Communist Party (Bakdash), Syrian Communist Party (Faisal) – participates in the ruling coalition (Syria is a dictatorship.)
*Uruguay – Communist Party of Uruguay – participates in the ruling coalition
*Venezuela – Communist Party of Venezuela participates in the ruling coalition. (Possibly a dictatorship?)

Communist Parties Recently Thrown Out of Power -
*Nepal - Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) was part of the Ruling Coalition, but they pulled out after the Maoist Prime Minister resigned. He resigned because he was prevented from firing the head of the Nepali military, who didn't want to let the Maoists join up with the Nepali military. They are currently waging a protest movement.
*Moldova (2001-2009)  – Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova. They once lead the ruling coalition, however, they recently lost power via democratic elctions, as opposition parties gained power. They still have the most seats though...most of the other parties ganged up on the Communists in a rival coalition.

I guess I may be anti-Communist, but I'm also a person who hates those who declare that Communism is dead in 1989...just because of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Communism is not dead. It is alive. It has power. It has the ability to reborn itself and grow once again. I don't think America really would desire to smash Communism, and I myself understand that Communism is split via many factions...but I don't like people thinking they won, when they plainly didn't.

Communism is just another nasty leftover from mankind's nastiest century (so far.) It's hanging on like a malignant, half dead parasite, rather like fascism.

Communism is many things, and too often it becomes either a broad phrase for "governments we don't agree with", or a cover image for non-communist governments trying to keep their true nature hidden. The second one is very common.

I have heard that the theory behind communism would be very good, except that any implementation quickly acquires dictators or people who wish they were dictators.

The theory goes against human nature and thus can never work. Humanity would have to change, or at least our circumstances. Either we would have to lose our desire for individuality and material goods, or everything we could possibly want would have to be in abundance a la The Culture.

Pure Communism, as exposed by Lenin and his kin, is well dead.  What is left are various forms of Socialism, often with a dash of Oligarchy where it's the dominate system/party.

Happened right about the time Stalin came to power.

Yea. What needs to be done is an either tech or genetic makeover to fix those bugs.

Pure Communism never existed outside cold war propaganda or the fox news definition of a generic term for enemy of the state. Communism is a unattainable absolute like its opposite anarchism.

I prefer the everything in abundance idea.

Yea, but that requires AI. AI leads inevitably to the singularity, which is per definition unknowable, hence my mind automatically passed over that possibility.

I think Toady is to focused on Dwarf fortress to fix the bugs with humanity.

Toady should make humanity open-source! That way more people can look into the code for bugs.

The thing some people are finding out is a mixture of communism and Capitalism seems to function rather well.

You know what always bugs me, people who make out that communism is an inherently flawed ideal. Maybe full on communism might be but then again a completely capitalised system is worse. At least the communistic one would be trying to work well and for the good of people as a whole.

Anyhow whilst I'm not a majorly avid supporter of communism I always like to point out that America became a capitalist super power because of the war, Russia became a communistic super power despite the war.
