Google Wave
« on: November 13, 2009, 06:54:32 am »

I was wondering if anyone else on here has access to Google Wave yet. It's a great tool, and one immediate application I can think of would be for community forts, you could host the files and any information about the fort on a wave.

I'm really looking forward to the wave being opened to more people. I asked for an invitation but I have not received one as of yet. I can see myself using this constantly, provided I can get people related to my tasks to also use it.

Intro video tells me absolutely nothing for 5 minutes... Early morning, Bored to tears, want my music.

Yeah the starter videos were dull, agreed, but the waves have so much functionality. We're using one to contain all the information about our 4e DND game.

If you manage to sit through it, some parts are mildly entertaining. Like when it crashes, and they begin joking about it.

Er. It might take a certain kind of person to find that entertaining though. But anyway, I'm really looking forward to this. It sort of seems like it could be the replacement for AIM/MSN that I always dreamed of, one day if not now.

I'm waiting for it to, from what I have seen it appears revolutionary.

I didn't know about it... Sounds interesting...  free collaborative tools right now seem always one feature short from what I want...

I've heard of it but never very much and I really can't be bothered to research it. Anyone care to give me a brief description?

Think of it as a cross between Wikipedia and IRC. You can 'chat' in real time, or not, but unlike chat you aren't restricted to your own words or even your current timeframe. You can use bots like IRC, and you can format your text like Wikipedia, and categorise your chats (or 'waves') like that too.

Still trying to get an invite myself, although at the rate they appear to be handed out, it'll probably go open waaaay before I get my grubby little mitts on one.

This was said on Slashdot, to which the reply was along the lines of "Yes! Exactly!" -- You word it like it's a bad thing, that it makes Wave seem petty and generic. But this is what is needed. IM has stagnated horribly. I don't even think MSN allows partially bolded/italicized messages-- this may be Pidgin limiting me, however.

The best IM clients are becoming things that emulate and imitate the protocol while *trying* to provide better features. We need a better protocol, and that's what wave is supposed to be. It's said to be highly editable and (partially?) open source; the default implementation is in-browser, but it'll be possible to make others, if I understood.

I personally see it as simple and brilliant, but I can understand how the hype can make it seem less.

I think of it like a much souped-up MoonEdit. And that's a great thing indeed.

It's actually pretty much what a friend of mine was trying to ambitiously create. This is far outpacing him, though.

Alrighty, I now have 6 google wave invites which I will give to the first 8 people who reply here and PM me their e-mail address.

Invites will be served on a first-come first-served basis, according to the timestamps in this thread.

(Edit: Hm, my invites dropped to 6 before I used any. Odd... well I will invite as many as I can!)
