Dwarven Water Birth
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:57:05 pm »

Lokum Oltarasteb, Peasant has given birth to a girl.
Lokum Oltarasteb, Peasant cancels Store Item in Bin: Seeking Infant.
Lokum Oltarasteb, Peasant cancels Seek Infant: Infant inaccessible.

Eral Oslanbubnus, Baby has drowned.

*sigh* And that baby put the fort population at 300 dwarfs for the first time.

The mother, however, was not in water, but next to a murky pool.  Is it common for babies to rocket out of the dwarven womb?  Or are they just super-dwarvenly fast and can outrun (outcrawl) their own mothers?

I can already see it: a fort built with nothing but exceptionally thin ledges over a large bear pit.  It's raining babies-slash-bear food!!

I don't think so. It's possible babies spawn in one of the squares next to the mother, which could be a hazardous square. By the time the message gets to me they're always holding the kid, but there seems to be a slight delay between the event and the message (my miners are usually already four z-levels up when I'm told about the magma pipe, for example).

I do know that falls, stuns, and moving water will knock a baby out of it's mother's hands. That's why military moms always spam with "Cancels sparring: seeking infant". My farmer dropped her first (or second, can't remember) baby from the mist generated by the drainage pumps for my drowning pit.

This ends with, "And they they drowned," doesn't it.

Anyway, yes. The baby spawns on a different square than the mother, AFAIK. This can put the baby anywhere nearby, even off your magmafall.
Also, best idea ever.

If pregnant Dwarves really do shoot babies out like Rocket Launchers... this gives me an idea for a new weapon.

This makes me wonder if mothers who have children on top of brooks will have their babies fall into it, as an extension of the babies-fall-down-stairwells bug.

Do they just drop them out where ever they happen to be?
Pregnant dwarf: oh hi there I was just-
*THUD*
Mother: Oh! a baby.

*Cough* They do that, yes. Babies seem to appear anywhere in a 3x3 area centered around the mother, at any time. Including, for example, an unconscious military dwarf popping out a baby.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

Unconsciousness is just Dwarven anesthesia. Preferably delivered via large hammer.
