For rpg's I would recommend the Baulder's Gate Series and the Fallout Series, Both are great. For the rts genre, there is a lot to choose from, but I'd say that the total war series stands out above the masses. the Good Old Games website has a bunch of good games on it for pretty cheap, including Fallout I + II and Tactics, along with quite a few other good titles.

But it did get a sequel. Or more like, a remake - Age of Wonders(1&2). Good stuff.

More of a (psuedo) spiritual successor. And at most AoW2; AoW1 was more Battle for Wesnoth than MoM.

YMMV.

It is hard to add to the overall list here, some top-notch games to be sure..at any rate I have a few more that I will add. IMO these are the best in show or next best in cases where somebody has mentioned what is the best in a genre or game type previously:

Space sim/Space flight sim:
The X3 series

Hack n' Slash w/grafix:
Dungeon Siege 2 (1 with the expansion if older graphics are not a problem for you)

Turn Based Strategy:
Gladius (Xbox there may be an emulator version not sure, I still play this on my old Xbox..very under rated 80+ hours of solid gameplay, a bit repetitive however)

1400-1500 AD European life/family RPG/sim:
The Guild and The Guild 2 (1st one is way better IMO, but the new one is not too bad, especially with some mods installed)

Tactical Turn Base Strategy:
Silent Storm and Silent Storm Sentinels (A bit hard to find, I saw it for sale on Amazon for 90$!!! Not sure if you can download it someplace or not, but well worth a look if so)

Action RPG:
Demon's Souls or The Witcher (Both are pretty hyped, but I think they are highly entertaining, first is for PS3 the other for a newer CPU)

Real Time Strategy/RPG:
The Spellforce series 1 and 2

Freespace 2. Get it legal and you can download the Source Code project updates that make it new and shiny and includes a port of the FS1 campaign.

Evil genius/ Dungeon keeper: For teh Evuls. Become to evil what Elvis presley was to rock n roll. EVILS PRESLY.

Prototype: So many imiginative ways to kill people, destroy helicopters by throwwing pedestrians at them, destroy tanks by throwing helicopters at them or just slicing through them with your arm, destroy crowds by using a pedistrian as a skateboard.

Attack of the 50ft robot!: Because.

Supreme Commander: Because headshotting a giant command mecha with a nuke never gets old.

I don't see AoE (Age of Empires) 2 up there. It's a nice lil gem of an RTS. Also Serious Sam and Serious Sam 2. DoW and the first two expansions are also good.

Can't think of any more offhand.

The legend of zelda series.

especially "a link to the past" (SNES, Gameboy) 2d sidescroller
It was just awesome. The puzzles were intense, the weapons felt good. The perspective was the best of its time.(2d side-scrollers can have problems that way) rescue the blacksmith to temper your sword, dig rupies, shoot arrows into statues, bomb hidden walls. ect.

More recently,

"twilight princess" (Gamecube, packaged with Wii) Third person 3-d rpg with realtime?
Where else will you get to throw a giant iron ball on a chain at stuff?
You have to wrestle Gorons in full 3d. Nuff' said. (hold X to not get trampled)

Mega Man X(2)  (SNES only?) 2d platformer
You can literally climb a vertical wall. You steal the power of defeated robot masters(like Wheel Gator and Flame Stag). You can even charge up any of those powers with the right upgrade. You can search long and hard for 4 subtanks each of which can hold enough to give you full health. Oh but the game is still really hard : P
Ignoring those few areas with spiked pits that take some getting used to.

Super Mario  64, (nintendo 64 only!) 3d hopscotch Jumping and walking challenge.
It was hard to play with an analogue stick, but it was fun jump around. Fighting the king bombom, the king thwomp, throwing king bowser around, and all sorts of stuff like that.

super mario galaxy. (wii only!) same as above, but on Varied round miniature round objects with "interesting" gravity, and less jumping. Nothin is big enough to be a planet, but you can run around and around and around without any walls.
Unlike Twilight "Princess", made to appeal to a very young audience. But jumping and exploring was actually alot of fun, jumping around 3d worlds with curious shapes and diameters. hell, moons sometimes shrank to nothing! you run around on a giant curved ball making a straight line even harder when you have to dodge giant rolling chain chomp balls.
Also, try not to fall into the black holes. less fancy jumping like in 64.

Nox, by wizards of the coast. (No CD full version online in some obscure forum)
Like, uh diablo? 2d shooter? 2d i don't know. These dam games seem to make it up as they go.
You need quick reflexes and practice. The spell wall will save you from a warriors charge, but you need to cast it just before he charges. The game even played with line of sight. the floor is 2d, but you can't see through walls.
The only real problem I can think of is the number of spells you need setup for a wizard or a conjurer. You really do need a mousewheel to keep up.

Might and magic 6,7,8 Can choose turn-based mode for intricate combat.
has very dated  low poly 3d worlds, and 2d monsters up to 8. I consider 9 ruinous.
Alchemy, leveling up, searching for weapons, learning skills, it all feels great! And finding the junk to give your party, like better hats and gloves. None of it was crap to start! Though plain leather armour got a bit old after awhile.
Cheap off ebay? probably has a collectors edition in best buy or something.
I got mine in gamestop long after they stopped selling in stores. Didn't find em all at the same time though.

As well as wizardry 8. The last version is 3d, but has a low poly count because that's the last in the series, with no sequel ever. Combat is always turn based.
I basically started out on the wizardry games. Bane of the cosmic forge was first. My whole family played, trying to beat the game, level up, get cool stuff and join the Upani or T'rang!
In wiz 8, Gadgeteers are so much more flavorful than bards! You can even find a valuable Giant silver nugget in a mine!(you need to buy it back later for custom armour though)
I don't know where you would find a copy of wizardry 8 these days. Someone probably has a no CD crack though.

Fun orb is free, so you should check out Arcanists. Worms armageddon with a little bit of balance. Miner disturbance is fun too, with its own version of underground monsters, digging hazards that DF should have...
-For the pc, in java, requiring a Jagex account Fun orb account, which works with Runescape too.

All of these games had really, Really, good systems for running around and doing stuff. Nothing kills a good game quicker than a bad interface.

Random comparison of DF to other games>
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Will clean this up later.

Yeah! All you young-uns needing to aim up and down!

Oh, and Battlefield 2. They released an update making two of the expansions free required content. It's a really fun 64 player game with huge maps and lots of mods. Should be really cheap. And if you're into modding get the bfeditor.

Oh, and if we're talking N64, get Paper Mario. #1 for N64 and #2 (Not Super Paper Mario) for the gamecube/wii. And Star Fox- do a barrel roll!

Black & White, the original, not the sequel or the expansion, those are crap.
Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse now, come on, every game that features Iron Maiden in its soundtrack immediately becomes awesome. Add lots of gore and cars to that and well...you've just stumbled upon the happiness formula.

And Star Fox- do a barrel roll!

Oh yeah!

Star Fox 64 is a required game. Many great quotes. You can legally acquire it either for the N64 (obviously), or off of the Wii Virtual Console. Only bad thing is, you can't save. So you have to do a runthrough in one sitting (or take pauses while leaving the system on), which can take a couple hours. Or legally acquire it first and then play it on an emulator with savestates.

And then Super Mario 64, as eerr said. But you can get that for the N64, off of the Wii Virtual Console, or get the DS remake. I recommend getting the DS remake, as it's portable and has more content.

You can save(in a way, more like continue) with the virtual console if you exit to the menu. When you come back it will be right where you left it.(I'm not 100%, but i know I have games of Adventure Island and Gradius that has my highscore from two years. It seems to work pretty well.)
