I've been wondering, considering how many games have passed by my radar, what would you guys consider to be some must play games, from any genre? I've been looking for some good ones, and felt, I might as well ask around. So, anyone got any games they feel everyone should try at least once?

Master of Magic is kind of like a mix between Civilization and Master of Orion. It's an old DOS game, but it's still quite fun to play. Not for sale anywhere that I've seen, but you can probably get it off an abandonware site. It's probably the #1 game that's never gotten a sequel but deserves one.

Get the Orange Box if you don't have it already. Best $30 I've ever spent on games. Not only do you get the games included (Half Life 2 and the 2 Episodes of it, Portal, and Team Fortress 2), but you can also download all the mods for HL2. There's tons.

Star Control 2 - Amongst the best games of all time. Unique game...not exactly part of any existing genre. Combines exploration and RPG with some excellent script writing, great humor and great music in a galaxy with real-physics space combat.

Princess Maker 2 - Sort of like a cross between Tamagotchi, Alter Ego and Pretty Polly Dress-up, packaged in a psuedo-RPG with some unique elements. You raise a daughter from age 10 to 18 to see what kind of woman she will become. Will she marry the prince? Will she become the Queen of Hell? Or just an ordinary housewife? I'm not kidding, by the way. QUeen of Hell is one possible ending. This game isn't a tentacle hentai game but neither is it a game for 8 year old girls. It is cute and adorable, but still a real game that was taken seriously by the designers. Play under dosbox, and absolutely make sure that you get sound and music working.

Phantasy Star 4 for the Genesis console - Standard console RPG, but with some of the best writing in the genre. This game will be especially epic if you've previously played some of its prequels. There were lots of years between the first and the fourth in the series, and the people who wrote 4 obviously cared a great deal about the original games, and filled 4 with a great deal of subtlety and humor for oldschool players. This game made me cry. Several times.

Thanks for all these games, but I'd also like the platform, and a potential place, like steam, to buy them, if its available.

Oh, and I've never been on steam. I need to get more tech savvy, or buy a better computer.

If some of the games I will mention have been mentioned, then this post just reinforces the idea that those games are must-have's! All PC games by the way. Please note that most of these games are 'classics' so they don't require top-of-the-line rig to play. The catch is they may be hard to find. Steam is a good provider of old games.

I'd normally suggest Tribes, a extremely entertaining FPS game(and by far considered by me, the best FPS I know). Unfortunately, the community has long since dwindled, however watch this site, once that site launches Tribes should be rebooted and great fun shall be had!

But it did get a sequel. Or more like, a remake - Age of Wonders(1&2). Good stuff.

I preferred the first homeworld to the second in pretty much all ways.

I'd agree with the rest of those that I've played (Civ, X-COM, all the RPGs)

I'd also add:

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Action platformer, available on Steam)
Alpha Centauri (4x strategy, technically a civ game but often missed)
Sid Meier's Pirates! (surprisingly addictive, available on Steam)
