Actually, since animals won't harm elves, he'll probably just drown.

Cave crocodiles have an unusual behavior in that after being tamed for a while, they will switch to an odd semi-feral mode, in which they can no longer be designated for slaughter or assigned to a chain, and will sometimes destroy furniture.   They will also sometimes show up as Hostile on the unit list. They will not frighten or attack your dwarves in this state, but they will attack and be attacked by caravan guards.  I've even seen them kill diplomats.  I don't know if this applies to Alligators as well as Cave Crocodiles, but if it does there's a good chance yours has been getting into fights with caravan guards.  Cave Crocodiles which are going feral will also trigger weapon traps, so if you have those it's possible the Alligator wandered into one.

I have a large breeding population of tame cave crocodiles in my fortress.  Hatchlings are immediately chained or slaughtered before they become destructive.  And despite being chained up for years in a remote corner of the fortress far from water, none of them have developed sudden wounds, so I really doubt that lack of water is causing your crocodile's injuries.  Even for creatures which need to drink dehydration doesn't cause wounds, it just kills them outright after a while.

The hostile cave croc is actually a known bug with resident creatures. Hopefully this is fixed or we will be seeing it more often.

Well, that still solves the problem, doesn't it?

Does that include children of resident creatures?  I've seen offspring of my cave crocs show the same behavior.

It also occurs to me that if the OP's alligator is randomly passing out from its injuries, and he has weapon or stonefall traps around his fortress, it could simply be passing out on a trap.

I'm not sure to be honest.

I don't know what the chances would be of the elves bringing cave cros or giant olms.... probably extrelemely low.....

I have no stonefall or weapon traps. Only cage traps. I suspect that the other posters are correct, and it's related to temperature damage and/or dehydration... although, as I say, the climate is uniformly mild at this location.

I still think it's traders attacking it.  I've never seen dehydration cause injury.  Sudden death to creatures that need to drink, but not injury.  I have however seen trade caravan guards shoot my chained-up, tame crocodiles for no good reason.

Check your unit list.  Does the alligator show as Tame, Friendly, or Hostile?

As far as I know, Crazedbrews has only been outside ONCE... the day I tried to feed him some Goblin prisoners... and even then, I had to put him in a cage and carry him out. He spends all his time three levels underground, either in the Cafeteria (up on top of a table) or else attending parties in the Zoo (right next door).

Also... if the wounds were caused by someone attacking him... how do you account for the fact that he is wounded in EVERY single body part (including each internal organ: heart, lungs, spleen, liver, etc); more than two pages of wounds altogether... and ALL of the wounds are exactly the same: light grey. That sounds environmental.

He is listed as "Tame".

Minor injury over the entire body sounds like environmental damage.  I've seen wrestlers cause that kind of harm, but caravan guards tend to carry weapons.  Probably the outdoor temperature, then.

The indoor temperature is a uniform 60 degrees Fahrenheit.  Without a homeotherm tag, alligators will be hurt by temperature. The reason why he initially didn't get injured was because his body was still warm from being outside.

He needs to sunbathe. Cut a hole in your roof.

Aha! That could well be the cause. Unfortunately, he will never be able to heal fully, since he can't stop using his internal organs (heart, lungs).

That's not the way it is.  I am fairly sure that only injuries to the brain and spine, and eyes will not heal.  These I know for a fact.

Although I haven't checked in a while, so I'm not sure about the other organs.

▼That is a misunderstanding.  I see how you might have thought that, from the most common method of healing those injuries (raw editing out the tags that do not let it heal also cause it to lose function while the raws are in that configuration.)  Also, CUT A FLIPPING HOLE IN YOUR ROOF. IT'S GOOD FOR THE DWARVES.

I thought that you had to stop using it (at least momentarily) before it would heal. I could be wrong, of course (it happens!).

I'm going to chain him up outside, in the sun.

Nooo. Construct a big, elaborate, gold-plated pond for him (two z's deep but only fill up one so he can't escape) and then dig out a skylight for him. Don't bring him to the goblins, bring the goblins to him.
