The Not-So General Knowledge Thread.
« on: November 09, 2009, 12:49:05 pm »

Right this is simple. Someone asks a question, who ever gets it right asks the next question. Don't post a question before your answer is confirmed as correct, and don't use Wikipedia, as you'll only be cheating yourself.

Q: Why does the Queen of England not wear a crown on Jersey money?

A: The crown would have extended above the edge of the money. Regalia law requires that any depiction of the regalia, worn or not, be complete with nothing cropped.

They couldn't shrink the image because that would have been in violation of the copyright which is held by Elton John and any negotiations regarding his holdings take several decades to sort out.

They couldn't make the money bigger without endangering the domestic wallet and purse market.

And they couldn't take a new picture because the Queen hardly sat still for the first one under promise of several butterhorns.

Do know what?

You are absolutely wrong.

And Queen as in monarch, not queen as in Elton John.

Because Jersey doesn't recognise Elisabeth as it's queen, but merely as a ruler? As such, she doesn't have a crown but she still is on the notes. ( Just a quick guess )

Correct!

Jersey was once part of the the Duchy of Normandy. William takes over from the Saxons, and keeps his title of Duke of Normandy. Fast forward a couple of hundred years, and King John manages to lose nearly all of the Duchy to the French. Jersey decides instead to swear allegiance to the English crown, 800 years pass, which feature exactly three battles, and eventually you get to today, where the Queen is, in fact, our Duke.

Anyone, feel free to post a question for me while I'm thinking of an interesting question.

As long as they are not about scouters and their power level.

I've got one:
Dynema's a very tough synthetic fiber used in bullet proof vests, yet it's made from the same basic chemical as another common polymer that's quite unlike it. You're likely to find said polymer in the supermarket, but what is it used for?

That Dynema-like polymer is called Antroflax. It's used in synthetic kitchen sponges, the powder in scented trash bags, and as the non-conductive bit of plastic that holds the price onto the metal strip of the grocery store shelf.

Here's one.

The planes landing thing is an urban legend.

The answer is of course to improve highway speeds on straight sections, since if the road were constructed more cheaply to follow land contours it would prevent cars from traveling at the desirable speed safely.
